Deadloch Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

The series begins with two friends walking by a beach and stumbling across a dead body on the ground. We meet Dulcie and Cath, who are making love when Dulcie gets a call about the dead body on the beach. Upon looking at the body, they realize it is Trent Latham. Dulcie’s boss Commissioner Hastings calls to tell her that they have a detective on their way to lead the case, but until he arrives, she is in charge.

While on the phone with Cath, Trent’s girlfriend, Vanessa, arrives, runs to the body, and sees her son dead. Dulcie questioned Trent’s whereabouts last night and if he was into anything illegal. Dulcie and Abby head over to Trent’s brother Gavin’s house to inform him of the news of his brother’s death. He freaks out, accuses half the city, and ultimately realizes he is dead, falling to his knees.

Who does Detective Eddie Redcliffe think killed Nathan?

We see the Detective come in the middle of Dulcie’s debrief and take over the case. Her uncharacteristic style causes quite a stir, which is loud and slightly upsetting to Dulcie. As she hears all the evidence gathered over the last 27 hours, Detective Redcliffe sets her sights on Nathan’s brother Gavin, who she believes is the killer, and wants them to bring him in for questioning.

Dulcie shows up to look at Kevin, a seal that is blocking the bridge again. One of the people brings up that Kevin ate the face off one of the bodies that came up on the sea and that once they get a taste for blood, they don’t stop. Detective Redcliffe shows up to talk to Cath, but she was passed out. So she asks their son about her relationship with Gavin, which he says was fine.

What is Nathan’s cause of death?

During the autopsy, the medical examiner broke down everything from his last meal (steak) to the laceration not being deep enough to kill him. As he is about to say the cause of death, Detective Redcliffe interrupts and says it was strangulation.

We find out from Abby in a text to Dulcie that Nathan’s tongue had been cut out, and she heads to talk to Redcliffe about it. As Dulcie brings up an old case from five years ago, a man, Rob Dixon, washed up dead on the same beach with his tongue missing. She believes that the cases are correlated somehow and that she is investigating the wrong person (Gavin). Detective Redcliffe doesn’t care what she says, and she is booking Gavin in the morning.

Dulcie calls the Commissioner to get her back on the case with Detective Redcliffe, and Redcliffe is not thrilled. Abby says she found footage of the harbor they should see. The video shows Gavin and Nathan arguing, but a bug covers up a camera so they cannot see what happened. It further cements Redcliffe’s thoughts that Gavin might be the murderer, so the duo heads out to hunt him down.

Deadloch Season 1 Episode 1 Ending Explained

Abby spots Vanessa Lathan during the city’s big get-together and calls Dulcie and Redcliffe. We see the duo head quickly downtown to grab her. While this happens, Cath asks Dulcie if she is working the case behind her back. The seal has arrived, and Cath shoots it with a sleeping dart, and as Dulcie and Redcliffe approach it, they find a dead body, and the pilot ends.
