10 Games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice you must play

We discuss ten games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice you must play. Add these well-recommended games to your gaming library.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (here on Sekiro) is an action title by FromSoftware, a developer known for punishingly difficult titles. Published in 2019, Sekiro is set in a fictionalized version of Japan and follows a shinobi called Wolf, who is out for revenge on the samurai clan that imprisoned him and kidnapped his lord.

This game poses a fearsome challenge with its combat, particularly its brutally tricky boss battles that FromSoftware is known for providing. If you’re looking for other painfully difficult titles like Sekiro, here are ten games you must play.

10 Games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Dark Souls franchise (2011-2016)

Taking place in a medieval fantasy setting, FromSoftware’s Dark Souls put the studio on the map for its intensely tricky games, focusing on button-perfect combat and facing down extremely tough enemies and bosses.

It spawned a whole new subgenre of games called Soulslike, which capture the difficulty of Dark Souls. When playing Dark Souls and its sequels, prepare to die. Prepare to die a lot.

Elden Ring (2022)

The amount of open-world titles is huge, but when FromSoftware made its entry, they still retained their tough-as-nails combat and boss battles.

Elden Ring is set in a fantasy world with parts provided by Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin; the main quest is to repair the Elden Ring and become the new Elden Lord. But as is normal with open worlds, players will get distracted almost immediately by the side-content and optional bosses.

Bloodborne (2015)

Bloodborne is a title by FromSoftware that has a very strong emphasis on blood and brutal combat. Players take control of a Hunter in the decrepit Gothic and Victorian-inspired city of Yharnam, which is currently suffering a blood-borne plague transforming residents into terrifying beasts. The player has to unravel the city’s mysteries and fight the nightmares while trying to find a cure.

Demon’s Souls (2020)

A remake of FromSoftware’s Demon’s Souls from 2009, this game is set in the fictional world of Boletaria, which has been consumed by the mysterious Deep Fog, creating soul-eating demons. Players travel the world to kill powerful demons, liberating the world from demon control and absorbing their souls.

Ghost of Tsushima (2020)

Set on Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan during the late 1200s, players will take control of Jin Sakai, a samurai charged with protecting the island. Gamers who enjoyed the fictionalized setting of Japan of Sekiro will love what this game has to offer. Dive into a massive open world where players can decide where and when to go.

Monster Hunter Rise (2022)

In Monster Hunter Rise, players track huge beasts and then take on the challenge of killing them. With plenty of different weapons to use, maps to explore, and bosses to fight, players that loved Sekiro will love this game.

Cuphead (2017)

Although it features a wildly different art style, players of Sekiro will appreciate the difficult platforming and boss rushes in Cuphead. Players follow the titular Cuphead, who, after losing a game with the Devil at the Devil’s casino, makes a deal with him to collect the souls of all the runaway debtors to make up for Cuphead’s loss.

As charming as the 1920s art style is, players shouldn’t let it fool them about the game’s intense difficulty.

Devil May Cry 5 (2019)

In the sixth installment in the Devil May Cry franchise (that is correct), the game follows a new protagonist called V as they attempt to stop the Demon King Urizen from destroying the world. Although the combat is more focused on style than Sekiro, it’s just as difficult and offers a fast pace and the ability to combo with the opponent.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (2017)

From Ninja Theory, the developers of DmC: Devil May Cry, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice focuses on a broken Celtic warrior during the Viking age who’s going on a brutal journey into myth and madness to fight for the soul of her dead lover.

While it has a simpler combat system than Sekiro, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is still no cakewalk, appealing to those who want a challenge.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019)

The combat in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has often been compared with FromSoftware’s titles, and while it isn’t as difficult or as punishing, anyone who’s played Sekiro should feel right at home in this Star Wars game. The story takes place between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope and follows Cal Kestis, a young Jedi coming to terms with past trauma.
