Summary

A fun yet sentimental episode that perfectly wraps up an impressive second season.

We recap the Crunchyroll and Netflix anime series Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 24, “Hometown,” which contains spoilers and explains the Ending.

After war broke out on the farm, threatening not only Ketil’s family but everyone living there, the conflict finally settled. Thankfully, Thorfinn’s (Yuto Uemura) words and actions were enough to inspire Canute (Kensho Ono) to leave Ketil’s farm and alter his plans entirely.

With so many things going well for Thorfinn lately, he and Einar (Shunsuke Takeuchi) can head to Vinland without any worries or fears holding them back. First, however, they must stop to see Thorfinn’s home, a place he hasn’t laid eyes on since he was six.

Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 24 Recap

Why does Ylva attack Thorfinn?

When Thorfinn tries to hug his sister, Ylva, she attacks him, having forgotten who he is.

Even after Leif explains this is her brother returned home, Ylva does not believe him, as she believes Thorfinn died years ago.

Does Helga recognize Thorfinn?

Helga immediately recognizes Thorfinn, noticing how much he looks like his father now that he’s grown up.

Who offers to help Thorfinn and Einar prepare for Vinland?

Leif offers to help Thorfinn and Einar prepare for Vinland after realizing they will need numerous supplies, including funds and ships.

He offers, knowing they won’t be able to gather what they need without his help.

Vinland Saga Season 2 Ending Explained

As they stand watching the water, Thorfinn tells Einar a story about his father protecting a slave, and Einar comments on how similar Thorfinn sounds to his father.

The episode ends with a culmination of various flashbacks to Thorfinn’s parents traveling together and young Leif before Thorfinn emerges from his home, revealing his new appearance to Einar.

There’s no doubt that this season of Vinland Saga lived up to the legacy set by the first. Seeing everything come full circle in this finale really illustrated Thorfinn’s journey and how far he’s come since viewers first met him as a child. Coming home and reuniting with his family felt like the perfect way to close up this chapter of his life, making this arc feel truly complete.

After so much struggle and trauma, it was also nice to have some comic relief for once. This episode’s tone was lighter than many of the previous ones, which also made it feel like it was signifying the end of an era. As well done as this season was, I would not be surprised if a third season of Vinland Saga was coming.
