Summary
A fantastically captivating premiere episode from start to finish. If they’re starting off this strong, viewers are definitely in for a treat this season.
We recap the Crunchyroll anime series Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5 Episode 1, “The Strongest Man,” which contains spoilers.
Season four of Bungo Stray Dogs led fans on one of the craziest journeys in the series thus far.
Not only are the Armed Detective Agency members still wanted terrorists, but viewers now know that Tachihara (voiced by Yu Hayashi) of the Port Mafia is also of the Hunting Dogs.
Although Tachihara now knows the Armed Detective Agency is innocent, it will still be hard for them to convince the rest of the World when Fyodor (voiced by Akira Ishida) has always seemed to be several steps ahead.
Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5 Episode 1 Recap
The episode opens with a heavily injured Kunikida in a prison hospital, watching a news report about terrorist attacks involving counterfeit coins from the Sky Casino. Suddenly, Jono from the Hunting Dogs comes to press him for information regarding the Armed Detective Agency’s involvement, but Kunikida swears they are innocent.
What does Jono offer Kunikida in exchange for his innocence?
In exchange for his innocence, Jono offers Kunikida the chance to join the Huntings Dogs and help him take down the Armed Detective Agency. However, Kunikida refuses.
Upon waking up, Atsushi reveals that he knows where the notebook page is thanks to Sigma’s special ability to exchange information. They now know that Kamui, the leader of the Decay of Angels, possesses the page.
Who breaks Kunikida out of prison?
After a sniper shoots the electronic lock on his cell, Kamui comes to break Kunikida out of prison in an attempt to kidnap and assassinate him.
Who rescues Fukuzawa?
Disguised as a member of the Decay of Angels, Ranpo kidnaps Fukuzawa, only to reveal he has actually saved him instead.
Ranpo then reveals he has saved all of The Armed Detective Agency members by infiltrating Kamui’s plans to kidnap and kill them.
Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5 Episode 1 Ending Explained
Ranpo tells Fukuzawa about how he initially escaped police capture and devised an elaborate plan to save everyone.
Later, at a press conference intended for an office scandal, Ranpo shows up to speak instead, scaring most reporters in the room. He plays a video and reveals that he has already sent evidence of the Agency’s innocents to all major law enforcement agencies while revealing the existence of the reality-altering notebook page.
The episode ends with Ranpo being arrested as he asks the police to think more rationally about the case and the logic behind his involvement to see the truth.
While I was excited about Bungo Stray Dogs returning, I wasn’t expecting them to come out of the gate so hard. I thought maybe we’d get a filler, but this episode was thrilling from start to finish.
There was definitely a lot happening, but not in a bad way. There was just a ton of vital information to process as we reach the climax of this story.
Considering season 5 really is just a continuation of season 4, I’m more surprised this wasn’t labeled season 4, part 2, if anything, as it picked up right in the middle of the action.
The last few minutes of the episode sold it for me, reminding me what it is that makes this show so interesting in the first place. The storytelling always surprises you in ways you weren’t expecting, and I hope that continues throughout the rest of the season.
