Summary

Revenant continues to deliver fun revelations and surprises even as it closes in on the ending.

This recap of the Disney+ K-Drama Revenant Season 1 Episode 10 contains spoilers.

We’re only a week away from the end of Revenant, and at this point, it feels like a shame.

Usually, twelve episodes of K-Drama feels like too many, especially when those episodes almost always run for over an hour. But Revenant has been very smart with its reveals, shifting its objectives and raising the stakes at crucial junctures to keep the pacing tight and the engagement high.

Only in Episode 9, we learned that one of the season’s most crucial mysteries, the identity of the evil spirit that everyone assumed was Mokdan, still had more surprises to offer. And those surprises keep coming.

Revenant Season 1 Episode 10 Recap

For San-yeong, the problem remains herself. She warns her mother than she’s too dangerous to be around at night, which brings her mother to a state of panic since it’s history repeating itself – Gang-mu, similarly ill-fated, said much the same thing.

San-yeong’s mother didn’t know about Gang-mu’s optic atrophy, and San-yeong doesn’t share that she’s suffering from the same thing, since why give her something else to worry about? Besides, her point of there being something strange in Gang-mu’s eyes is really a metaphor for him being outside of himself, puppeteered by a foreign entity. Again, like San-yeong.

The apple hasn’t fallen especially far.

Among San-yeong’s mother’s recollections of Gang-mu include him receiving a bag from Woo-jin’s father, who was Hae-sang’s grandmother’s assistant, containing a camera (which San-yeong has in the present day.) Woo-jing’s father knew how Hae-sang’s mother died, but then as now, Hae-sang’s grandmother doesn’t care a jot about him and won’t reveal the true name of the spirit causing all this bother.

What is the next cursed object?

Anyway, the object hunt continues apace. The spirit tells San-yeong that she needs to find the remaining two to clear her vision, and that presumably means her actual vision, not the ones she experiences upon touching the cursed objects, which she tells Hae-sang about here.

The next object, a glass bottle, is hidden in the ceiling of an abandoned building, but it sends San-yeong into a terrifying stasis when she touches it. When Hae-sang takes it, a still-possessed San-yeong rushes to a convenience store for water, guzzling litres as a time. The spirit talks about having been left alive for seven days without food or water, her survival treated by Hae-sang’s grandparents as a nuisance.

Who killed Woo-jin?

Let’s talk about Woo-jin, among others.

The efforts of Hae-sang’s grandmother to preserve the family’s secret regarding the spirit have cost many lives both directly and inadvertently. Woo-jin, for instance, was killed by her after he found out about the secret.

The spirit’s nature is, through its possession, to destroy those most beloved of its victim. Hence, Hae-sang’s mother’s death. Hong-sae discovers that Hae-sang’s father, who starved himself to death at the spirit’s behest, had the same marks on his wrist as the apparent suicide victims.

Who is the spirit’s next potential victim?

Hong-sae informs San-yeong that the spirit’s next intended victim is her mother, and the wheels have already begun turning since the left-handed spirit had San-yeong, while possessed, sign an insurance policy that would ensure San-yeong received a good chunk of change should her mother pass away.

Revenant Season 1 Episode 10 Ending Explained

What is the real name of the spirit?

At the end of the episode, it becomes apparent that Hae-sang’s grandmother is the mastermind behind all this evil.

She is bound to the spirit, which gives her eternal life. She killed her husband to ensure her life could continue by feeding him the incorrect name, allowing it to live on. He was also abusive, which will do for motivation.

Now Hae-sang’s grandmother is the only person who knows the spirit’s true name, which we learn is Hyangi, and she has a vested interest in keeping it a very closely-guarded secret, as she has been doing, for her own benefit and much to the detriment of the rest of her family, all these years.

Hae-sang and Hong-sae are resolved to getting the true name of the spirit, which they theorize might be Mokdan’s older sister, from Hae-sang’s grandmother, doing so on February 28th, a “safe day” when spirits can’t harm you.

However, they have overlooked the crucial detail that the spirit, through its hosts, may know everything – and more – that they do.
