Jared Freid brilliantly deconstructs dating in the modern world with his hilarious new Netflix special 37 & Single.

This review of the Netflix film Jared Freid: 37 & Single does not contain spoilers.

Jared Freid performed his first stand-up comedy set on April 1, 2010. Since then he has hosted two popular podcasts, JTrain Podcast and U Up?, that boast almost three-quarters of a million downloads. He hits the stage for his first Netflix special with Jared Freid: 37 & Single.

Jared Freid: 37 & Single review and plot summary

Jared Freid: 37 & Single sees the comedian sound off about being single at 37, how frustrating dating apps have become, and the strange world of breaking up with someone.

Freid hits the stage saying, “I’m 37 and single, and I’ve gotten pickier.” He jokes about how it’s gotten so bad that he has started judging women based on their names on dating apps. Freid brilliantly deconstructs how he wishes people would start being honest on their dating app profiles so that he could no longer be single. This was a fantastic opening monologue.

Freid breaking down how hard it is to break up with someone is hands down one of the funniest bits of the year. He shares that he bails on the relationship right before things get serious. Within this bit, he further explained that when it’s time to break up with them, and they ask why, he wants to be honest with them.

Two of my favorite lines from this part were, “Your texts come in green. If we can’t be in the same group chat, how could we live in the same home?” and “You clapped when the plane landed.” I wanted to get out of my chair and give this man a standing ovation. Everybody hates that green bubble and how horrible your photos come into a group chat. Just get an iPhone and save us all the trouble.

While Jared Freid is a name I’ve heard in the past, 37 & Single was my introduction to his stand-up work. He spent almost his whole hour dissecting the world of being single in a way that genuinely made me belly laugh. I am not single, but I’ve always said that if I were, it would be awful in this day and age, and with Freid being the same age as me, it sounds like my assessment is correct.

Is Jared Freid: 37 & Single good or bad?

In one of the most relatable stand-up comedy specials of 2023, 37 & Single brilliantly shares the highs and lows of being single and the struggles of relationships with modern technology.

I had equal parts of laughter and nodding my head in agreement throughout the whole special. Freid is something special with his brilliant but straight-to-the-point joke-telling.

Is Jared Freid: 37 & Single worth watching?

Are you single and battling dating apps? This special is for you. If you watch your friends struggle with being single and fighting dating apps, this special is for you. I walked in knowing very little about Jared Freid, and I walked out a fan. 37 & Single needs to be at the top of peoples’ watchlists.
