The Netflix thriller Who Is Erin Carter? has a very familiar premise but enough excitement in the story for viewers to want a Season 2 – a seemingly normal person really has a secretive set of skills and a dangerous past that they’re on the run from. In this case, the titular Erin is an ex-pat schoolteacher in Barcelona who, we learn across the seven-part series, has fled Blighty after working as an undercover agent.
In the present day, she lives with her daughter Harper but finds her carefully cultivated cover exposed when she’s forced to intervene in an armed robbery. Suddenly, front-page news, a whole can of worms is opened that comes to involve Erin’s husband Jordi, her cop neighbor Emilio, the villain Daniel Lang, and Harper’s birth mother, Lena.

The streamer will pay some attention to the important metrics like the number of watch-hours, and how many viewers watch the series to completion. They’ll also consider critical and audience reception on aggregators like Rotten Tomatoes, The show already seems to have amassed a decent amount of popularity, though, and the relatively slight seven-episode season is ideally suited to a binge-watch, which will be favorable to that all-important completion percentage.
Despite Who Is Erin Carter? being perhaps a little too familiar in its broad strokes, it is that kind of content that tends to do very well on home viewing, and if the show picks up word of mouth, it has all the makings of a serious hit despite its wavering quality.
After having watched the season, one gets the sense that Netflix has some faith in the show and its characters. The ending of Season 1 has a solid thematic payoff but also teases a second season. There’s the chance that Netflix sees dollar signs in the marketability of a female action heroine who can sustain multiple seasons, though, without the mystery of Erin’s identity, subsequent seasons would have to take a somewhat different approach.
