As far as beloved kaiju properties go, Gamera is up there with the best of them. Gamera has been part of the landscape since the 1950s and was initially meant to compete with the incredible success of Godzilla.
Twelve movie versions down the line, starting in 1965, and it is safe to say that the Gamera franchise has stood the test of time and cemented itself into the kaiju cultural landscape, much like rival Godzilla.
Fans of kaiju may be interested to know that while Gamera stands at an impressive one hundred and twenty feet, Godzilla actually weighs in at a more substantial one hundred and sixty-four feet tall. The two would battle in an epic film produced by rival companies Daiei and Toho.
There would always be controversy in such a production, so to avoid the inevitable wave of pushback from fans, the film is not considered canon within the two monster’s respective timelines.

Originally, Gamera was a fire-breathing turtle that could fly and spin, of course, and despite its destructive capabilities, was also shown to have an empathic side. As the character evolves, the prehistoric creature starts to lean into the role of protector of Earth and its children, defending them against all monstrous attacks.
Gamera would start to gain some traction in the US, especially after five of the films from the property would be used in the hugely popular Mystery Science Theatre 3000. There are two distinct eras of Gamera: the Showa Era, which is usually considered to be from 1965 to 1980, and the Heisei Era, widely regarded to be from 1995 to 2015.
The 1995 era was considered a reboot for the franchise, and after an announcement at the 2015 San Diego Comicon to celebrate the franchise’s fiftieth anniversary, a proof of concept film would be shown, prompting excitement for a relaunch. Still, the project would not go anywhere after it was delivered.
In 2023, the first ONA (original net animation) series was announced, which consisted of six episodes to be screened worldwide on the streaming platform.
Excited fans will be desperate to binge the show, set in 1989 and featuring some epic monster battles against the backdrop of Tokyo.

Early reports and rumors indicate that a second series of the show will be made available in 2024. The series, produced by the Kadokawa Corporation and animated by ENGI, serves as the first animated entry in the Gamera franchise.
ENGI was established in 2018, based in Tokyo, and is an animation studio.
The company behind GAMERA Rebirth focuses mainly on anime, including game animations and theatrically released films.
In March of 2020, a second studio was opened in Okayama.
Although no official confirmation has arrived from Netflix, we are quietly optimistic that a second set of episodes will appear.
