Our Flag Means Death Season 2 Episode 5 Recap
3.5

Summary

“The Curse of the Seafaring Life” is a less eventful installment on the whole, but there is still plenty of humor and many heartwarming moments to enjoy nonetheless. The romances are well-handled, but the show needs some tension now to liven things up.

Just like Laszlo’s cursed hat in What We Do in the Shadows, hilarity ensues in the Max series Our Flag Means Death when Stede refuses to be parted with a cursed suit. In Season 2 Episode 5, “The Curse of the Seafaring Life,” the crew tries to persuade Stede to burn this particular suit, whilst Ed attempts to make amends for all of his previous crimes.

Our recap contains major spoilers for the episode, so read at your own risk, matey.

Our Flag Means Death Season 2 Episode 5 Recap

The episode opens with Ed thanking his crewmates for letting him return to the Revenge. It is supposed to be an apology, but Ed refuses to use those exact words. Instead, he talks about leaving the darker stuff in his past and moving forward. As you’d expect, the crew is not best pleased with his return.

Lucius is the only one airing these concerns though. Later, he bumps into Ed while the former captain is completing odd jobs on the ship. Ed asks if there is anything he can do to make amends. Lucius suggests pushing him overboard. Ed accepts the punishment, but it doesn’t cure Lucius’ anger problems.

Elsewhere, Izzy appears to have come to terms with his own anger problems. He is now channeling that rage into his sword-fighting skills. Stede asks for pointers and Izzy agrees to train him. Unfortunately, Stede is without any natural skills. Izzy clearly has his work cut out. Cue a montage of training exercises.

What does Stede take from the cursed ship?

Putting his skills to the test, the crew raids the next passing ship. The crew are surprised to find this particular ship filled with dead passengers though. It appears to be a cursed ship after all, with no survivors onboard. A dying priest warns Stede that every item aboard the ship is cursed before departing this world. This doesn’t stop Stede from stealing a beautiful new suit though.

The crew celebrate their latest raid and Stede shows off his shiny new suit. Jim warns everyone that it is cursed, having heard the dying priest’s final words. It isn’t long before the whole crew believes Jim’s warning. They fear Stede and try to tear the suit from their captain’s body.

In the other subplots, Lucius draws boyfriend Pete, but he can’t stop thinking about Ed. The punishment didn’t work, he can’t seem to move on. Izzy passes on some words of wisdom and Lucius tries his best to move forward. He eventually draws Pete a lovely portrait and then proposes to his lover beside it.

What does Ed learn while fishing?

Meanwhile, Ed and Fang go fishing together. This allows Ed the chance to own up to his past crimes and reflect on his sins. Fang admits that he once hated Ed, but since the mutiny, he has come to terms with everything. Ed didn’t realize the pain he had caused. He learns to be patient whilst fishing and accepts his past mistakes.

Stede accepts that the fears of the curse aren’t going away. He meets with the crew to discuss a way forward. The crew all agree that they need to be rid of the suit, that they need to pass it on to its next victim. They make good on these plans at their next raid, handing over the suit to their hostages.
