Summary
Upload struggles to deliver any real laugh-out-loud moments in “Cyber Discount Day” with many flat and surprisingly tame jokes. It does however excel in the drama department, offering some sweet scenes as the original series develops its romances, especially with Ingrid and Nathan’s dual relationships.
Upload Season 3′ third installment, “Cyber Discount Day,” satirizes Thanksgiving and the very company that the show works for in the process. This holiday celebration brings the real Nathan back to his mother, whilst the discovery of a backup copy sparks jealousy in our protagonist.
The third episode begins with Nathan checking up on his old company. Nathan continues to have nosebleeds though and these symptoms imply that he doesn’t have long left before his head explodes. He keeps this news a secret from his lover Nora.
The couple meet up with Nathan’s mom Viv to celebrate Cyber Discount Day together. Viv lives in a cheap, crowded building, sharing her living space with multiple strangers. Nora and Nathan are forced to share a bed with Viv that night, as they are struggling with their finances.
They both agree to start saving up for their own place. Nathan looks for work in the real world, whilst Nora sneaks in some extra shifts at Lakeview. Nathan applies at a temp agency, but he is unwilling to degrade himself for money.
Why does Ingrid have no money?
Meanwhile, in Lakeview, Cyber Discount Day gets underway. Ingrid is excited to spend lots of money, but she is also struggling with her finances because her family has finally cut her off. The copy of Nathan is looking forward to the big buffet that night, but Ingrid cannot afford it.
Aleesha is also stressed. She’s been asked to work some extra shifts herself. She tries to juggle this heavy workload at the same time as cooking for her family in the real world. Aleesha orders the AI guys about, although they are spurred on by Luke and stage a protest, refusing to work on the busiest day of the year.
Nora researches the issues with human downloads, concerned about Nathan’s safety. She then begins another shift at Lakeview. Nora is able to fix the AI guys’ malfunctions and then spots Ingrid in the crowd. She overhears Ingrid blackmailing Tinsley for a free buffet.
This strange conversation inspires Nora to re-enter Lakeview. Here she finds the copy of Nathan taking a shower. Back in the real world, the real Nathan collects rubbish for work. He misses the splendor of Lakeview and decides to patrol the streets looking for a better job.
Aleesha stresses at home, cooking her family a 3D-printed meal. Her mother tinkers with the machine and breaks it though. Aleesha is then informed of drama brewing back at Lakeview. The AI guys are all refusing to work again. They blame Luke for planting the idea of taking time off into their heads. To get the AI guys working once more, Aleesha promises them their own party that night.
Nathan finds a vacancy at a Hug Suit Rentals shop. On entering, he discovers that Ingrid is working there. She admits that her family has cut her off because she was too obsessed with Nathan. Ingrid then brags about having a new boyfriend. Nathan asks if they are hiring still, mentioning his need for work. Ingrid suggests looking for vacancies at the meat print factory.
Having taken a trip to the factory, Nathan returns home with a misprint slab of meat. As the friends and family members sit down for their meal together, Nora cannot help but blurt out her crazy news. She informs Nathan that there is a copy of him roaming around in Lakeview. Nathan realizes that Ingrid is sleeping with his copy.
Why does Aleesha spend Cyber Discount Day with Luke?
Aleesha returns home from a busy day at work to be with her family. They have decided to eat without her though. She is upset by their rudeness and returns to Lakeview immediately, where she has a meal with Luke and the AI guys instead. Aleesha bonds with Luke and even teaches the AIs how to eat properly.
Ingrid returns to Lakeview after her tiring shift too. She tells the copy of Nathan that she cannot afford the buffet, that she is poor and has had to get a job. Nathan is supportive, adding that he is proud of her. He states that Cyber Discount Day is not about the money but about family and friends instead. This makes him think about his mother.
The copy of Nathan then calls Viv in the real world, to speak with his mom. The gang panics, not wanting the two Nathans to see each other. The real Nathan is eager to see what his copy looks like, but Viv keeps the camera away from him. Real Nathan is jealous of his handsome counterpart.
Nora comforts Nathan afterward, saying that she loves him. The episode then concludes with Nathan having his worst nosebleed yet. It doesn’t look great for real Nathan’s future existence in this reality.
