Summary

A satisfying conclusion to Ibara’s arc that still manages a few surprises along the way.

In the last episode of Crunchyroll’s Dr. Stone Season 3, Ibara managed to petrify almost everyone in the Kingdom of Science. Now, in Episode 19, he and Senku must face off for the future of everyone on the island. If Senku can’t take control of the Medusa now, he may risk all of his friends being petrified for another three thousand years.

This episode feels like the perfect wrap-up to Ibara’s arc, and should hopefully pave the way for some more focus on the show’s science elements in the handful of episodes remaining.

Dr. Stone Season 3 Episode 19 Recap

The episode opens with Ibara questioning how Senku managed to avoid being petrified with the rest of the island. Senku responds that he couldn’t allow that with the Medusa up for grabs.

How did Senku avoid petrification on the island?

While on the island, Senku avoids petrification by calculating the exact moment the Medusa would hit him and tossing revival fluid in the air so that it would land and revive him once the beam passed. With the information Chrome gave him and the hand signals from the other crew members, Senku is able to plan his toss to the last second and learns that revival fluid actually does stop petrification in its tracks.

Senku sets a trap for Ibara and then hits him with the Steam Gorilla. He then attempts to use the Medusa, but Ibara stabs him in the arm before he can command it. With limited weapons, Senku flees into the forest and attempts to attack with acid, only for Ibara to lead him to the edge of a cliff.

In an attempt to save himself, Senku tries bluffing about having more weapons hidden in the communication device on his back, but Ibara sees right through him. Ibara commands the Medusa to affect five meters five seconds from then.

As Ibara waits for the device to take effect, he realizes that the acid Senku threw earlier was to distract him from seeing Senku’s real goal of throwing revival fluid on Ryuusui.

Ryuusui suddenly appears with the drone, flying it into the Medusa. He, Senku, and Ibara end up in a tug of war for the device, but at the last second, Senku and Ryuusui release their ropes, leaving Ibara to be petrified.

How does Dr. Stone Season 3 Episode 19 end?

Ibara tosses his hat toward the beam at the last second, throwing off its range and trajectory. He thinks he has them, but Ryuusui sacrifices himself by running straight toward the Medusa.

As he catches the Medusa, Ibara sees that Ryuusui attached one of the listening device earrings to it as he ran through the beam. Using the communication device, Senku then instructs the Medusa to affect five meters in one second.

While reflecting on how he is once again alone, Senku gets a call from Ruri and remembers he doesn’t have to be alone again.

All in all, this felt like the perfect time and the perfect way to wrap up Ibara’s character, at least for now. He was a formidable foe who gave Senku and his friends some serious trouble on more than one occasion. I was glad to see he didn’t go down without putting up a serious fight in this last episode. While he was physically stronger than Senku, he was also reasonably cunning, which made him especially dangerous.

With only a handful of episodes left, it will be nice to take a break from the fear and danger to enjoy more of the science aspects of Dr. Stone again. I’m curious to see what happens to characters like Moz now that the main threat is over.
