Summary

Virgin River is known for its saccharine storylines and shocking reveals, and “Father Christmas” is filled with these cliched sequences and more, but it is hard to not be swept away by the show nonetheless. It has its flaws, but this is still wholesome and engaging TV regardless.

Virgin River Season 5 Part 2 concludes with Episode 12, “Father Christmas.” In the season finale, Mel meets with her biological father for the first time, Charmaine goes into labor and the annual Christmas tree decorating competition gets underway. It’s a packed ending to Part 2 that balances wholesome, emotive moments with the show’s standard daytime drama twist reveals, all against the cozy backdrop of a rare, Christmas-themed installment of Virgin River.

The episode wastes no time at all in addressing Mel’s biological father. Mel and Jack start the finale by driving up to the man’s home. Mel is nervous to meet with Everett Reid but plucks up the courage to speak with him in person anyway. Everett denies being Mel’s father, although she can clearly see his Lumberjack Games 1976 trophy inside the house.

Dejected, Mel returns to the car. She knows that Everett is her father, but he doesn’t want anything to do with her. The couple drives home. Mel is saddened by the rejection, yet she promises to focus on enjoying Christmas with her real family instead.

Charmaine calls to interrupt this quiet contemplation. Her contractions are worsening. Mel and Charmaine meet at the clinic on Christmas Eve. Calvin has driven her there. Charmaine reveals that he is the twins’ father. Mel is in shock. Charmaine doesn’t want Calvin there, so he is asked to leave. Walking through the clinic, Charmaine’s waters break.

Meanwhile, Hope and Doc continue their preparations for the Christmas tree decorating competition. Doc is called to help out with Charmaine’s pregnancy. Before darting off, Doc hands Denny the test results. Denny and Lizzie are about to find out the gender of their baby.

Why is Calvin not in prison?

Before Doc arrives, Mel and Charmaine discuss the Calvin news in more detail. Mel is surprised that Calvin isn’t in jail. Charmaine explains that the FBI has dropped all charges against him because he has been cooperating with the police. Melissa Montgomery tried to kill Calvin, so he was placed in witness protection.

Does Charmaine finally give birth to the twins?

Mel asks about how Charmaine and Calvin hooked up. Charmaine blames the booze. She asks Mel to keep it a secret from Jack. He then shows up, shocked to see Charmaine in labor. Jack leaves as Doc is arriving. Charmaine is given an IV drip and then she gives birth to two healthy baby boys. It’s another emotional moment from the series.

In the other subplots, Preacher tells Kaia that he loves her. Whilst Jack and Brie’s parents continue to argue. Jack orders them to talk it out, to come to some agreement. Lizzie’s mother accepts her daughter’s pregnancy news and offers to try and support her the best she can. And Doc tells Denny that he is considering vow renewals with Hope before his clinical trial begins.

What does Michelle want from Cameron?

Cameron informs Muriel that his ex-fiancée Michelle has been to visit. She wants to get back together with Cameron, start a family, and build a new life with him. Cameron rejected Michelle though, happy to be with Muriel in Virgin River. Muriel admits that she can’t have children anymore. Cameron doesn’t seem too fussed by Muriel’s news though.

Later in the episode, Muriel pleads with Cameron to rethink his position. She doesn’t want him to regret this decision later in life. Muriel would be heartbroken to split up with Cameron, but she is concerned that he’ll want to be a father in the future, something that she cannot give him.

After Charmaine’s birth, Mel and Doc regroup. Mel tells Doc all about her biological father. She then asks Doc to walk her down the aisle at her wedding. Doc says that he would be honored to. He then tells Mel about Lizzie’s pregnancy.

Are Lizzie and Denny having a girl or a boy?

There’s more good news, Kaia has accepted the job of fire chief in Virgin River. It looks like she will be staying in the town for good. Then Lizzie and Denny reveal that they are having a baby girl.

Brady and Brie flirt by the mistletoe. They look like they are about to kiss, but Jack interrupts this awkward exchange. Jack and Brie’s parents have finally made amends. Christmas is saved. To make Christmas Eve that bit more special, Doc then goes and proposes to Hope again. They will be renewing their vows after all. Oh and Doc and Hope win the Christmas Tree competition too.

How does Virgin River Season 5 Part 2 end?

The finale ends on Christmas Day. We see snapshots of all the major families in the series on this special day. After their meal, Jack gifts Mel with a puppy called Pony, as Mel always said she wanted a pony for Christmas.

Brady, Lark, and Hazel spend the night playing board games together. Lark then receives a phone call from a man in jail. It’s implied that he is Hazel’s father and possibly Lark’s boyfriend. This man appears to be Jimmy (Ian Tracey) and with Lark’s help they plan on conning Brady somehow. It is unclear what their scheme involves though at this point in time.

Then Mike phones Preacher with more bad news. The body in the woods has been identified, it is in fact Wes Logan’s body, as Preacher first feared. He struggles to tell Kaia the truth.

The episode then concludes with Mel and Jack. They sit on their porch together, enjoying time with their new puppy. Everett then shows up, he admits that he is Mel’s father, but he just didn’t know what to say. He was clearly overwhelmed by the situation, but now he is ready to accept Mel in his life. Everett then hands over all of Mel’s mother’s love letters. But he has some shocking news to tell his daughter in the meantime. The camera pulls away before this major revelation.
