Summary
A soft and charming premiere gets Soundtrack #2 off to a pleasantly unchallenging start.
Some TV shows are simply made for TV. They’re entertainment. They’re exaggerated and sensationalized and presented in the most titillating way possible. Soundtrack #2, the highly anticipated follow-up to Soundtrack #1, streaming now on Disney+, is a TV show made to resemble the warm comfort of a real-life relationship. Episode 1 is a soft, charming, laidback introduction to two new characters who it’s easy to believe have always known one another – and might, in a roundabout way, know you.
Do Hyun-Seo (Keum Sae-Rok) and Ji Soo-ho (Steve Noh) are ex-lovers, about to possibly become lovers again through a series of unexpected circumstances that reunite them four years after their initial breakup. The low intensity of the drama works to the show’s benefit, allowing viewers to settle in and get to know each character while teasing at what might have led to their separation in the first place and how their lives might be redefined by each other in the future.
Soundtrack #2 Episode 1 Recap
What do you call a meet-cute between people who have already met? No matter. Either way, this premiere episode is about Hyun-seo and Soo-ho re-entering one another’s lives, their lingering feelings still rather obvious.
Hyun-seo owns a modest piano academy and teaches kids the instrument; she dreams of opening her own restaurant. She’s an award-winning pianist who has big aspirations and is willing to work towards making her dreams a reality.
How do Hyun-seo and Soo-ho reunite?
It is quite by chance that Hyun-seo is reunited with her ex. Soo-ho is the CEO of a content creation company but is prone to overwork, which leads to him collapsing and reawakening with tinnitus. To help, a doctor prescribes listening to a soft-sounding instrument. In a mistaken mutter, he mentions the piano, and his friend Chang-sik endeavors to acquire one for him.
Through a former student, Hyun-seo is hired as a piano instructor by Chang-sik, totally unaware that her new student is her ex-boyfriend.
Who broke up with who?
In a flashback, we see that it was Hyun-seo who broke up with Soo-ho, confessing to not seeing a future between them. Soo-ho was left heartbroken.
Soundtrack #2 Episode 1 Bonus Track
In the episode’s bonus track, Soo-ho watches a live stream of a woman folding origami. She explains that is soothing for the soul, and a meaningful pursuit if it’s allowed to be. Soo-ho bonds with another user, both chatting late while watching the paper folding.
How does Soundtrack #2 Episode 1 end?
The premiere ends with Soo-ho and Hyun-seo not being entirely thrilled to see one another. However, after a bitter argument, both agree to work together for their own reasons; money, closure, take your pick.
However, it seems pretty obvious that the real reason is lingering romantic feelings, so we’ll have to see how it goes.
