Summary
“First Date” will remind you of the real-life counterpart of meeting a potentially romantic partner. It sets the tone for a series focused on its characters rather than their more exciting jobs. On the flip side, this approach to a spy show risks boring the viewer.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 1’s grand Prime Video premiere introduces us to protagonists John and Jane in Episode 1, as they take on a new job with an international spy company. The money’s good, the missions promise travel and excitement, but there’s one caveat – the two spies must relinquish all contact with the outside world and take on new identities as each other’s spouses.
The series starts promising enough with Jane and John Smith (as played by Alexander Skarsgård and Eiza González) enjoying a bottle of wine at a secluded cabin. Trouble brews when several SUVs appear out of nowhere, and the two lovers decide to “stop running.” Unfortunately, neither gets to put up too much of a fight before the mysterious black ops in the SUVs kill them both.

When we first meet the new Mr. and Mrs. Smith, they’re talking to their text-only supervisor (lovingly referred to as Hihi). She has a master’s degree, but the CIA rejected her because of antisocial tendencies. He was in the military and got “dishonorably discharged.”
Jane and John meet in their new home, complete with their fake documents, marriage certificates, wedding bands, and a gun collection, before being given their first assignment the following day.
What is John and Jane’s first mission?
The pair’s first mission involves following an older woman to a restaurant and waiting for a package. While there, Jane and John talk about how they were recruited for their roles and we find out they both received the same email inviting them to apply.
After their target leaves the restaurant, John and Jane follow her to a park where she meets up with her much younger boyfriend/sugar baby. There’s still no sign of the supposed package, but the two spies are becoming more comfortable in each other’s company.
The woman’s next stop is a theatre where she sits down to enjoy a play. Jane manages to get in but almost misses her target leaving with the package because she’s too distracted texting John a tale about pancakes and pedophiles from her childhood.
Jane follows the woman to a mobile phone store while John tries to get his hands on a similarly-looking box. The two create a distraction and successfully retrieve their package.
What was in the mysterious package?
When the pair delivered said package to the requested address, they were both disappointed to see it contained a cake. As Jane and John walk away from the house and are expressing disappointment about the contents of their mission, the house explodes. It wasn’t just a cake.
The couple just about manage to avoid being captured by police. They separate and head back home to discuss the day’s events. Jane is concerned about how close they were to exploding along with the not-cake, but John reminds her this is the type of high-risk mission they both signed up for.
How does Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season 1 Episode 1 end?
It doesn’t take long before the pies switch focus to a more pressing matter; they must agree on a name for their house cat. Jane thinks the feline looks like Max, but John wants to name him Samuel. Unsurprisingly, Jane wins after admitting that Max is the pet she brought from home.
Episode 1 ends with John and Jane saying goodnight to each other.
