Summary
The Silent Service Season One – The Battle of Toyko Bay delivers one of the better pilots I’ve seen in recent memory. It ramps up the stakes early with much promise of massive battles ahead.
When a submarine goes down, the entire world of Japan struggles to uncover the truth in the Prime Video series The Silent Service Season One – The Battle of Toyko Bay. In Episode 1, when Hiroshi Fukamachi realizes his friend Shiro Kaieda was on board a submarine that went down, he refuses to believe there isn’t more behind the story.
What happens to the Yamanami Submarine?
Shiro Kaieda, the Captain of the Yamanami Submarine, is sitting on board listening to music. One of his soldiers interrupts him to inform him they need to see him. On board the Tatsunami, Commanding Officer Hiroshi Fukamachi is getting word from his team of a vessel they can’t ID. The Yamanami ship is vastly approaching their boat, colliding with the Tatsunami, quickly sinking the Yamanami, and killing over 70 people, including Shiro Kaieda.
Fukamachi heads to question Fleet Admiral Tadokoro about the crash of the submarine. He says the US are the ones that searched the ship and identified the bodies and wonders if he is sure that Kaieda is dead or not. Tadokoro says he knew Fukamachi was close to Kaieda and needed to let it rest.
Fukamachi heads back to his ship to listen to the replay of the crash to see if he can identify something odd in the footage. He informs his team that he believes Kaieda is still alive. When they analyze the audio, they determine that it wasn’t the Yamanami that crashed, but an unmanned ship collided.
What is Shiro Kaieda’s real mission in The Silent Service Episode 1?
Chief Cabinet Secretary Wataru Unabara is meeting with the Prime Minister and his team to discuss an upcoming project. The project is revealed to be Seabat, a nuclear submarine part of America’s Seventh Fleet. The collision was a coverup to allow Kaieda and his team to board and run the Seabat ship in agreement with the US.
On board the Seabat, the crew sees some sleepy whales (ships) around the submarine. Captain Kaieda decides to give them a wake-up call by launching a torpedo at them. Although the Captain of the US military tells him to stop, he does it anyway. It is a “wake-up” call, and the Captain informs Kaieda he will be court marshaled and pulls a gun on him. However, Kaieda informs him that this is their ship and they are going on a detour.
The Japanese government and military have met to figure out what their next plan of action will be because of what Kaieda did onboard the Seabat. Neither the US nor the Japanese government know what Kaieda’s course of action is, but they all want to get Seabat in their possession.
Who does the Japanese Government employ to capture the Seabat?
During the conversations, everyone agrees that Hiroshi Fukamachi and the Tatsunami are the only ways for them to capture the Seabat. They meet with Hiroshi to inform him of his mission. Although he thought the orders would be to sink the Seabat, they tell him he must capture it instead. It is daunting, but Hiroshi and his team take it on.
