It didn’t take long for The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live to bring Rick and Michonne back together, but Episode 4, “What We”, is the first outing that will find them freed — albeit temporarily — from the influence of the CRM. On the run together, they will take shelter and work through their differing opinions on what their immediate future may look like, but as we enter the back half of Season 1, it’s clear that the CRM are never going to be far behind.

In The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Episode 4, Rick and Michonne Take Shelter

The promo for “What We”, which played at the end of Episode 3, revealed that Rick and Michonne survived the clearly unsurvivable tumble they took from the CRM helicopter. They seem to take shelter in an apartment building, one that looks surprisingly untouched by the passage of time.

A quasi-domestic setting is probably a good one for Rick and Michonne to work through their present relationship issues. To recap: Michonne wants them both to flee from the CRM and head back to Alexandra, and Rick doesn’t since after his attempts — several of which were detailed in Episode 1 — he doesn’t believe it’s possible.

Rick and Michonne will be recaptured by the CRM

It might not happen in Episode 4, but I’m fairly confident that Rick and Michonne will be recaptured by the CRM and taken back to Cascadia Forward Operating Base. There were so many mentions of the upcoming opening ceremony and how it’ll be populated by all of the CRM’s top brass that if we didn’t spend some time there during the event I’d be very surprised.

This is to say nothing of the fact that all of the show’s other key characters — Pearl Thorne, Jadis, and Beale — are all at Cascadia. Having Rick and Michonne genuinely escape and leave all those characters behind would be dumb. And while it doesn’t seem like The Ones Who Live has any idea what to do with Thorne, I seriously doubt this would happen.

The key questions are how they’re captured, and whether they’re captured together or separately. Since Michonne dragged Rick out of the chopper, the CRM — except for Jadis, obviously, but she has a reason to keep the information to herself — don’t know what the relationship between the two of them is. Because of this, there’s a chance that they could maintain the subterfuge even after returning to the CRM, meaning they’d have to break out again.

Matthew August Jeffers says “People are in for a treat” with Episode 4

In an interview with Screen Rant, Matthew August Jeffers — who played Nat in Episode 2 — teased big things for “What We”, which was written by series star Danai Gurira:

I hung out with Michael on the other side of the camera for two episodes. It was so cool to be able to hang up my gear and appreciate and watch from, like you said, a fan perspective, up close and personal. Episode 4 is stunning. It’s all beautiful, but Danai wrote episode 4, and people are in for a treat. I’m excited to see the response.

Gurira’s writing is one of the big reasons to pay attention to this upcoming episode.
