Highlights of the Month

The Sympathizer (Limited Series) | April 14

The marquee release of the month is without question The Sympathizer, a limited-series adaptation of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen. The seven-part series, each episode of which will air weekly, marks Robert Downey Jr.’s limited series debut in multiple antagonist roles.

The plot revolves around a North Vietnamese plant in the South Vietnamese Army who, nearing the end of the Vietnam War, is forced to move to the U.S. with a community of other South Vietnamese refugees while continuing to secretly spy on them for the Viet Cong.

The Zone of Interest (2023) | April 5

While not an original, the controversial A24 movie will make its home streaming debut on Max on April 5. The Jonathan Glazer film, loosely based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis, follows Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife, Hedwig, as they try to live a normal family life right next to the camp.

The movie won Best International Film at this year’s Academy Awards and led to Glazer’s polarizing speech condemning the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Sleeper Hit of the Month

The Jinx — Part 2 | April 21

While it’s fictional content grabbing the headlines this month, The Jinx — Part 2 must not be overlooked. The Jinx was nominated for six Emmy awards and won two after its original release in 2015, and in the years since then, the team has continued looking into the crimes of Robert Durst, who was convicted of the first-degree murder of journalist and screenwriter Susan Berman and was sentenced to life in prison.

This six-episode follow-up contains more hidden materials, including calls and interviews involving Durst during his incarceration, before his death at San Joaquin General Hospital in January 2022.

Shows Ending In April

Outside of the list above, there are a couple of big finales to keep an eye on in April.

Curb Your Enthusiasm

The final ever episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, titled “No Lessons Learned”, will air on April 7. Season 12 of the show has been absolutely stellar so far, and various clues have suggested that the finale may mimic the infamous conclusion of Seinfeld, with Larry David ending up in prison.

If nothing else, this is a momentous moment in recent TV history. Curb has been operating at a high level since 2000 and the end of its legendary run will be a very big deal.

Tokyo Vice Season 2

The Michael Mann-produced crime thriller starring Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe has once again flown under the radar with a dynamite second season that will come to an end on April 4.

It might not be the highest performer right now, but this is a guaranteed cult classic that people will find themselves returning to more and more. Season 3 hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it’s very likely given the show’s critical and commercial success, so catching up with Season 2 when the season is completed wouldn’t be the worst idea.
