Summary

An emotional end to a brilliant season, Steven Yeun shines as Mark as he’s dealt the most serious blow yet.

Invincible has been going from strength to strength with awesome fight scenes, but the emotional arcs for its characters to back them up. Episode 8 of Season 2 is no different, featuring a brutal fight between Angstrom Levy and Mark. Episode 7 revealed Levy was holding Mark’s family hostage; a shocking twist just in time for the season’s ending.

Audiences also see the consequences of this on Mark, as even though he wins it comes at a steep emotional price. It puts him back to his lowest point emotionally, which is saying a lot. The ensemble takes a back seat in the finale, aside from some concluding scenes.

Opening on the Viltrumite ship, Nolan beats up some robots. This is just to prove to General Kregg that he’s passed inspection and can be executed.

Levy vs Mark

On Earth, Mark arrives home. Levy threatens to snap Debbie’s neck and shorts out Mark’s earpiece. Mark slowly approaches him, demanding Levy let his family go, but Levy ignores him, tossing Debbie aside. Levy becomes frustrated when Mark doesn’t remember him, and sends him to a dimension with talking dinosaurs.

When he’s brought back, Mark says if Levy hurts his family he will kill him. Levy calmly explains he has no intention of hurting them unless he thinks that will hurt Mark. Mark is sent to another dimension with Professor Ock and a web-based hero. Debbie tries to reassure Oliver everything will be OK, but Levy says she can’t possibly know that.

Once Mark is brought back, Levy threatens to send Debbie and Oliver to their deaths. Mark tries to reason with Levy, that on the night of the accident, Levy saved Mark. This causes Levy to freak out, sending Mark to yet another dimension. Levy has flashbacks to evil Invincibles, ones that have killed his wife and son.

Mark and Debbie Resist

Levy brings Mark back, but this time Mark hits him with a weapon. He picks up Levy, but once again Levy threatens his family. Mark orders Levy to let them go, to take his best shot at killing Mark. Instead, Levy throws a knife at Debbie. Mark chases after it and is again sent to another dimension, full of zombies.

Debbie hits Levy with a plant pot and uses a shard to slash him. She tries to escape, but Levy causes Mark to crash into her and then sends Mark through another portal. Levy explains that in some worlds, Debbie accompanied Omni-Man through his rampage, making her a traitor. Debbie retorts she’s not, and she raised Mark who defied his father, and maybe in this universe Mark is the hero and Levy is the villain. This further drives Levy into a rage, where he breaks Debbie’s arm.

Mark is having some downtime with campers, talking to them about the difficulty of the fight he’s having with Levy. He’s then sent through multiple dimensions, including one where he’s seemingly mocking Batman’s name. When Mark returns to him and sees his mum injured, he flies into a rage, throwing Levy into the road. The two fight across dimensions, until they come across an abandoned desert.

Invincible Season 2 Ending Explained

Invincible Season 2 Episode 8

Here, the pair fight, and in a rage Mark pummels Levy to death, splattering blood everywhere. Mark realizes he’s lost control and starts shaking. In Debbie’s home, Global Defense Agency soldiers enter. Cecil arrives, ordering a soldier to take Debbie to the hospital. She asks if he knows where Mark is, but he says no.

Walking in the desert, Mark desperately justifies killing Levy to himself. He also realizes he’s trapped in this dimension. Nolan is beaten by Kregg, and on the way back to his cell Allen makes contact with him.

An older version of the Guardians of the Globe, including an older Robot and Atom Eve appears before Mark. They’ve come to send him home through a portal. Just before Mark walks through, Eve confesses that she always loved Mark and that he should talk to her past self about it. When he goes back, Robot’s helmet flips up, revealing Rex inside.

The Aftermath

Back on Earth, Mark is contacted by Cecil. Mark sees his mother and hugs her. On the roof, Cecil talks to Mark, reassuring him that Mark isn’t like Nolan, but Mark doesn’t agree, saying he crossed a line. Cecil tells him to go home. At the Guardians of the Globe HQ, Rudy apologizes to Amanda. She accepts it and agrees to a second date.

Immortal returns to his holiday cabin after fishing, and finds Dupli-Kate. She concealed a dupe of herself in case she died and explained she was tired of dying. The two hug. Two women visit the tomb of Ka-Hor, searching for their dad. The old pharaoh rises, but when he sees the two females he explains he can only occupy a male body, which gets him called sexist. It’s a hilarious moment, subverting what audiences might expect.

Mark flies over, once again inadvertently trapping Ka-Hor. He’s freaking out over flashbacks to time spent with his father, wondering if he is the same. He watches Amber and almost goes to talk to her, before flying away. Amber notices. Later, Debbie and Mark oversee their house being rebuilt with April and Oliver.

At night, Debbie and Mark chat on the roof. Debbie admits things were just starting to feel normal, but it was shattered by Levy. Mark announces he wants to drop out of college to learn how to control himself. Debbie pushes back initially but relents when it upsets Mark.

At the end of Invincible Season 2, Mark Can’t Quite Confess His Feelings

On a bridge, Atom Eve looks out over the bay. Mark flies over, and she hugs him. When Mark doesn’t want to talk about what’s happened, Eve explains that she’s always there when he does. Mark starts to tell Eve something, likely how he feels about her, but he falters, leaving Eve hanging.

Allen manages to make contact with Nolan on the Viltrumite prison ship. Nolan asks Allen to leave Mark out of the effort to overthrow the Viltrumites and confesses that he feels shame and regret for his actions on Earth. The suffering of “lesser beings” upsets him, indicating he still has some growing to do. But above all, he misses his wife.
