Apple TV+ continues to preserve a more traditional model of content distribution in May 2024. With shows airing determinedly airing weekly and sitcoms returning for their third and fourth seasons, the streaming platform is beginning to resemble an old cable network more and more each month.
Not that this is a bad thing! There’s still a place for the classic approach, and few platforms deliver high-quality original series with the reliability of Apple. There are a couple of those coming this month, as well as several continuing from April, so I’ve rounded up everything you need to know and picked out some obvious highlights. You’re welcome.

Highlight of the Month
Dark Matter (Season 1) | May 8
Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connolly star in this adaptation of Black Crouch’s 2016 novel of the same name about a physicist warped into an alternate version of his life.
Big-name cast aside, this has all the underpinnings of a hit — well-liked source material, ambitious premise, popular genre underpinnings, and so on, and so forth. There has been a bit of controversy already with the trailer apparently spoiling one of the book’s key twists, so maybe indulge in the marketing at your own peril, but either way, it’s with keeping an eye on this one.
Trying (Season 4) | May 22

Few shows last four seasons in today’s TV climate, but the popular British sitcom Trying will buck that trend when it debuts another outing in May. Rafe Spall and Esther Smith are seen reprising their roles as Jason and Nikki in the new season, which takes place six years after the end of Season 3.
Having a show like this that really allows its characters to grow and develop across multiple seasons is a big part of the reason why Apple TV+ has managed to carve out space for itself in the Streaming Wars, and long-time fans will be eagerly awaiting the latest clutch of episodes.

The Big Cigar | Apple TV+
The Big Cigar might not have the mainstream genre underpinnings or prebuilt audience of May’s highlights, but the new series does boast a dynamite premise that finds Black Panther Party co-founder Huey P. Newton enlisting the help of Hollywood producer Bert Schneider to elude an FBI manhunt.
It’s a slightly lesser-known cast, but don’t let that put you off. The blending of real-life figures with a dramatic TV narrative, not to mention a very specific look and feel which so few shows have these days, should conspire to make The Big Cigar a stand-out release for Apple over the coming weeks.
