Summary
The pace suffers a little in Episode 10, but the character dynamics do seem to still be heading in the right direction.
Ordinarily in K-Dramas that air two episodes a week, the second half of a double-bill is the exciting one, usually paying off the drama built up in the first. This, oddly, isn’t the case in Miss Night and Day Episode 10.
Don’t worry, I’m not making any outlandish claims that the show is boring or anything like that, but it does feel at this late stage like it might be running out of road, plot-wise. The problem with revelling in the characters and the tone sometimes is that the actual meat of the narrative can get lost in the shuffle. You can’t tell a story on vibes alone.
Episode 9 was a bit draggy too, you’ll recall. Let’s keep an eye on things.
Picking Up Where We Left Off…
Speaking of the previous episode, the latest outing picks up from there, with the gang investigating the hospital for evidence against Mr. Baek. Im Sun ended up trapped in Baek’s office, where he was comparing two blood samples from years apart that – to him, not to the audience – indicate that Im Sun has magically changed blood types.
After rushing out of his office to investigate further, Sun is able to go and free Byung-duk, who had also found himself cornered after trying to take a surreptitious photo of a fentanyl stash and alerting a nearby nurse with the sound of the shutter. Ji-woong’s contribution to the evidence-gathering efforts is an out-of-place drug.
It’s worth noting that at this point we still don’t have a concrete idea of what Baek is actually up to beyond some vague statements, but we know it connects back to the disappearance of Mi-jin’s aunt, other kidnappings, and everything we’ve seen thus far.
Let’s Talk About Cats
A brief aside to pick up on the magic cat plot.
When we saw Ga-yeong post online about the cat earlier in the season, it didn’t amount to much. Ko Won, though, has considerably more reach, so his post goes viral immediately. However, it also leads to some problems, since among the many people offering to help are some just looking for an excuse to meet a K-pop idol.
This is the case when Ko Won and Sun go out to meet one of the women who claim to have found the cat. However, it does deepen the relationship between Ko Won and Soon somewhat, so it isn’t a waste of time, even if it isn’t narratively vital.
A Love Triangle Emerges
The core romance of Miss Night and Day is obviously Mi-jin and Ji-woong, but that becomes mightily confusing in Episode 10 thanks to the addition of Ko Won into the mix.
Some of this is crossed wires – Ji-woong calling Mi-jin after a conversation with Ga-yeong and Ko Won picking up the phone – but some of it feels a little more substantive and is worth keeping an eye on.
For instance, after Byung-duk makes a fool of himself by taking Ko Won out for drinks to warn him off Im Sun and getting so drunk that Ko Won has to call Ji-woong to pick him up, Ko Won asks Ji-woong outright what’s going on between him and Mi-jin. Since he – understandably, to be fair – doesn’t have a satisfactory answer, Ko Won is ready to move in.
In the closing scenes of Miss Night and Day Episode 10, Ji-woong tries to tell Mi-jin to stop avoiding him, but it backfires. Enter Ko Won, who shows up on Mi-jin’s doorstep to tell her how he feels. While they get close under an umbrella, Ji-woong is watching from nearby. Hopefully, this is the motivation he needs to be a little clearer with how he feels about Mi-jin.
