Last Christmas in Virgin River sure was a Christmas to remember. But this season… What’s that noise? It’s wedding season!
Mel and Jack are engaged to be married, and I don’t know about you, but I feel like it’s about time! But let’s not ignore that many storylines are happening in Virgin River that deserve their time in the spotlight. I’m going to break these up into three main plot points.
But before we get into that, I want to note that I’m highly disappointed for one main reason… How has Jack and Mel’s Dog, Poney, grown? He’s such a big boy now! — I’m sad we didn’t get more of the baby puppy, but also puppy time in general. Virgin River… We need more of the Dog, please!
JUST MARRIED
JUST MARRIED! As the wedding Limousine drives away with its rattling cans behind, Jack exclaims, “That’s going to be us soon.” Virgin River kicks off with its main plot point—Jack and Mel’s Wedding.
Mel experiences one of the classical bridal dilemmas: the dress of her dreams is unavailable before her wedding! But Mel is blessed, and the Ladies of the Sewing Circle jump to her rescue; “Just think of us as your Fairy God Mothers” – BIBBIDI-BOBBIDI-BOO!
Let’s quickly rewind the tape so I can write with a transition. Right before Mel’s wedding dress drama, we see the girls having a good old natter about Everett Reid, Mel’s newly discovered father. The question around the block is, “Is your father coming to your wedding?”
MEL AND EVERETT
We saw season 5 conclude with Mel and Everett reconnecting their long-lost Father-Daughter relationship. Everett gifts something to Mel unbeknown to us but softly follows up with, “I’ve got something important I need to tell you.”
In the first episode of Season 6, we finally get the answer we’ve waited all year for! I don’t know about you, but this is the big reveal I’ve been waiting for! What could it possibly be? Is he dying? Is he leaving Virgin River? What more family secrets are in this whirlwind of a story?
As always, the creator of Virgin River decides to play the long game with us and keeps the complete information teetering behind closed curtains; HOWEVER, what I believe we now know is that Everett has a past, and it’s time for him to face the music (a nice little analogy for an ex-guitarist and band member.)
The Answer from Everett: “Some people in this town aren’t going to like me being a part of your life. I made some enemies. Hurt People. Done things I’m not proud of. Things… Folks might not be able to move past. Some of those folks… might be friends of yours. Well… Like Vernon Mullins, for One.”
I look forward to discovering how the big, bad Wolf, Everett, got into such bad blood with Doc. Let’s admit that Doc has always been a stubborn soul, so let’s not jump to any conclusions that Doc is innocent of all of this.
PREACHERS TRIAL
Funnily enough, the main point that stood out to me in this episode concerning Preacher’s Trial was from a conversation that Mel and Jack were having. Mel sadly states, “I can’t imagine our wedding without him.” – I immediately wondered, “Is this foreshadowing?” – something doesn’t feel GOOD about that line.
From the start of the episode, Preacher is confident that everything is going to be okay as long as he has friends around him who love and support him during this challenge in his life. But as the trial draws closer, the more scared Preacher becomes. From this fear, Preacher searches for comfort in his new love interest, Kaia, and drops the BIG L BOMB. But she doesn’t say it back — ouchie! Could there possibly be a worse night for an “I Love You” rejection?
And the bombardment doesn’t start there. It’s the morning of day one in the trial, and Brie brings about some bloomin’ bad news: “An updated version of the prosecution witness list, and they’ve added someone.” — It’s Jack! They want JACK… to testify… AGAINST his BROTHER… PREACHER. And this is where the episode ENDS.
Virgin River is notorious for added twists and turns that NO ONE expects! — Honestly, it’s like whiplash, every season, every episode.
ALL THE SMALL THINGS
Similar to Gilmore Girls (the best recommendation if you love this show!), Virgin River has a whole community within the story that deserves acknowledgment.
To touch on a few:
- Vernon’s clinical trial is successful, Hallelujah!
- Lizzie and Denny are having a baby girl!
- Question: is Muriel over Cameron?
- Brie and Mike are happily in love.
- Brady still pines over Brie to Kaia (yet continues to date Lark!).
- And the clinic celebrates 30 years of business!
