Season 3 of Silo has hit its halfway point, and there are big questions that we still need answers to. Granted, there’s a chance that some or indeed all these remaining mysteries will spill over into Season 4, which is fair enough, but we still need some short-term payoff, and many viewers are understandably curious about what form that may take.
Based on the events in the most recent episode, we can at least hazard a guess about what might go down in the remainder of the season. I’ve put together five big talking points and ideas that could really do with being clarified to some extent in the remaining five episodes, since most of them will unlock new, bigger mysteries for the final season to unpack.
How Much of Juliette’s Memory Is Still Missing?
The big moment of “Memory” was, fittingly, Juliette getting her memory back with the help of Daniel Keene’s Pez dispenser. But has her memory come back entirely? No, not exactly. She still had to be subjected to a certain amount of suppressants so that Sims and Bernard didn’t give themselves away, and it’s likely that specific memories will require specific relic triggers.
Juliette definitely remembers about the Safeguard and Silo 17. But is she privy to information about the outside world that even she doesn’t realise? She has still been stripped of the rigorous mechanical clarity that has made her so effective in the past, and she’s still relying on other people – including some who potentially can’t be trusted – to fill in the blanks.
Who’s Driving Daniel Keene’s Car?
In the “Before Times” storyline, Daniel and Helen were pursuing a lead about Per Stensen, a billionaire AI obsessive who had a hand in the Iran mission that cost Charlotte her memory. However, their vehicle was suddenly hijacked remotely by an outside agent who plans on taking them elsewhere.
Given the nature of the car being taken over strongly mirrors how Charlotte’s aircraft was hijacked back in the premiere, there’s probably a link here. Whoever is hacking the car is almost certainly connected to the Iran conspiracy, and thus to the plot that likely led to the downfall of the Earth and the creation of the Silos.
Who Is Stealing From Critical Supply?
Orla Kent’s murder has opened up a whole new can of worms for Sheriff Billings. As Carla explained to him, Orla was likely killed because she was investigating a long-running theft operation stealing lightbulbs from Critical Supply, the secret vault containing pre-apocalypse items that can’t be replicated in the Silo.
Orla’s murderer, who is probably the thief, must be in a position of some power to even be able to access Critical Supply. But more to the point, that person by definition holds the social fabric of Silo 18 in their hands. Critical Supply is shrouded in secrecy because if the citizens had an idea of what was in there, and perhaps more importantly what isn’t, they’d know how long the Silo has before it descends into chaos.
As things stand, there are only two years’ worth of lightbulbs left. After that, the lights go out, the food production stops, and everyone dies. If anyone were to find that out, it might cause a civil war in the Silo.
What’s the Deal With the Upcoming “Gray Goo” Episode?
Episode 8 of Silo Season 3 is titled “Gray Goo”, which is almost certainly a reference to the nanobots that took down Charlotte’s plane (although they haven’t been confirmed as nanobots just yet.) What this means is that the episode will likely delve into the specific nature of the apocalyptic threat in the Before Times, shining a lot of light on the formation of the Silos and who was involved.
Thanks to the Pez Dispenser, which Daniel gave to Helen, we have to assume that Helen somehow makes it into Silo 18. However, we still have no idea how we’re going to get to that point. Our answers in this regard are very likely to come in the “Gray Goo” episode.
Will the Timelines Converge?
Season 3 of Silo has introduced and persisted with a dual timeline structure. In the second season, time was split between Silo 18 and Silo 17; here, it’s split between the present-day and the “Before Times”, with Daniel and Helen being our point-of-view characters in the flashbacks.
As above, it’s likely that Helen will eventually find her way to a Silo. However, the “Before Times” seem many years removed from the creation of the Silos. Of course, with every episode, they’re getting closer and closer, but one of the biggest remaining questions is whether the temporal streams will meet before the end of the season.
