True Story Season 1 Episode 1 Recap
The first episode of the limited series begins with a flashforward to The Kid (Kevin Hart) being interviewed by an unknown person. “So are you asking if I was surprised? I don’t know. I mean, maybe I was. Look you can think you know someone because you’ve been through shit together. Or because you came up together. But to actually know what’s going in someone’s head. Or heart. You can’t know that. You can’t”. What exactly happens for Kid to be in that situation, we won’t know just for now. And with that, the credits roll, and True Story begins.
As True Story begins, Kid is embarking on a tour for his newest film, which has just grossed over $1 billion dollars at the box office. As such, he appears on The Ellen Degeneres Show. Afterward, whilst in the VIP area of a plane, Billie (Tawny Newsome) is about to announce something when Kid gets recognised by a fan, Will. It’s a very uncomfortable experience, and it’s understandable when Herschel (William Catlett) threatens to knock Will out.
When Kid and his crew arrive at the Four Seasons hotel, Kid reunites with his brother, Carlton (Wesley Snipes). After Kid performs a show, he and Carlton hit the clubs. And it doesn’t take long before they’re doing shots together. But when Kid starts to drink too much, he questions whether he should go home. However, Carlton persuades him not to do so.
But that may be advice Kid will live to regret as, during the night, Kid is woken up by Carlton. A girl, Daphne (Ash Santos), is laid next to him. The problem is, however, that she’s dead. And like that, both of their lives change in an instant. Carlton suggests that they tell the cops that she was him and OD’ed in his bed. But Kid is aware of the drama that may follow and how the media will spin it. So instead, Carlton calls up a gangster guy that he knows: Ari (Billy Zane).
The ending
Upon arriving, Ari states that he will take care of “sleeping beauty”. When Kid wakes up from a nap, Ari plays the piano as he tells him that the body is gone. But as Kid is filthy rich, Ari wants $500,000 a month for a year in return for his services. Whilst Kid is livid about it, Carlton has no sympathy: “You ain’t paying for my fuck up, this one is all yours”. After which, Kid meets Ari in his hotel room. Apparently, the price ain’t gonna fly and Kid strangles Ari to death. The first episode of True Story concludes just as Carlton walks in. “I decided I didn’t wanna pay six million dollars,” Kid tells him.
