Virgin River season 4, episode 12 recap – the ending explained

The finale opens with a lovely, emotional opener. Mel says yes to Jack’s proposal and the happy couple are finally engaged. Jack impresses with a perfect ring and the most romantic of settings. We fast forward to two days later and the lovers are living it up in a fancy suite. Mel receives a notification that she has the paternity results. Mel is nervous to find out, but Jack reassures her that the results won’t change anything. Mel reads off the results, elated that Jack is the father and they are having a baby girl. It’s a cherished moment that the show runners have worked all season towards.

Brie’s awful past comes back to haunt her, with Don back in town. Brady tries to make Brie comfortable, yet his overprotective nature actually has the opposite effect. She tells him to just be himself. Mike pays him a visit to dole out some good news for a change. All charges have been dropped. Deputy Howard was helping Calvin launder money and he admitted to planting the gun in Brady’s truck. Howard has been arrested. Mike apologizes for ever suspecting him.

Hope continues her pursuit of what she calls a sitter. Her top choice is Lizzie, who she offers the job to later that day. Lizzie is unsure about accepting this new role, because of the awkwardness surrounding her relationship with Denny. They’ve just fallen out and she would have to see him every day in this new employment. Denny receives a call from the doctors, who conclude that he fainted due to dehydration, but this could be a lie. Doc is concerned for his grandson, but Hope calls it an overreaction.

Doc congratulates Mel on her engagement, although this news is overshadowed by Cameron’s resignation. He is quitting due to their awkward conversation. Mel tries to get Cameron to stay, but he stubbornly refuses, stating that he would have to watch Mel and Jack’s happy ever after play out, which would be just too painful for him. Mel worries that with her pregnancy and Cameron’s departure, Doc would be running the clinic singlehandedly. She offers to be Hope’s health aide, in the hopes that Cameron would reconsider and stay. This plan makes sense on paper, but I fear it wouldn’t work in practice.

The whole town cheer on Ricky at his adorable send-off. It’s an emotional end to Ricky’s arc, with his grandmother devastated and Lizzie visibly upset. They wave their banners and signs, saying their goodbyes. At the station, Ricky admits his fears over enlisting, but Jack gives him a heartfelt pep talk. It’s a sad moment that really pulls at your heartstrings, especially when Jack says he’s proud of Ricky.

Preacher takes the law into his own hands and hunts down Vince. He does however call for backup, but Mike is faraway and time is of the essence. Preacher breaks into the cabin as Vince is threatening Paige at gunpoint. He wants to know what happened to his brother Wes. Preacher attacks Vince and manages to knock him out, leaving Paige in floods of tears. There’s also a handy flashback that reveals what actually occurred the night Jack was shot. Jack pulled a knife on Vince and unarmed him, but the criminal had a second gun and shot Jack. Vince took both guns, but the bloodied knife was kicked out of view.

Denny overhears a conversation with Doc and Mel. They discuss the clinic and Hope’s search for a health aide. Once Denny is aware of Lizzie’s issues with taking the job, he rushes over to hers. She tells Denny how she can’t be around him anymore, not after he strung her along. Denny explains why he can’t be with her, confessing to having Huntington’s disease, which is a terminal illness.

The shocks just keep coming. Mel and Jack go for dinner with Nick and Jo Ellen to celebrate the business and their engagement. Nick asks if his sister can tag along, who happens to be none other than kingpin Melissa Montgomery. She’s taken over from Calvin and is now running the criminal business. An unknown onlooker snaps photographs of Melissa from afar.

The ending

Don ambushes Brie and asks her to sign a nondisclosure agreement where she would agree not to discuss their relationship to any third party individual. Brie is appalled by Don’s brazen attitude and tells the rapist that she had to leave her home, job and life to move away from him. She informs Don that she will be pressing charges after all.

Charmaine phones Jack worried that Todd is cheating on her. Later at the meal she calls again, stating it is an emergency. Mel and Jack head over and find Charmaine on the floor struggling to breath. She says that this is karma for lying to Jack. Charmaine then reveals that Jack isn’t the twins’ father after all.
