It could be argued that the fifth episode of The Sandman is the show’s best. With Jonathon having finally escaped from the hospital where his mother, Ethel, had kept him trapped for a number of years, Jonathon can now use the magical ruby as he wishes.
With his mother unable to stop him and in the egotistic belief that using the ruby to take Lord Morpheus’ kingdom is his birthright, Jonathon intends to save the world. Believing that making the world more honest will help save it, Jonathon heads to a diner. But what happens when he gets there?
The Sandman season 1 – what happens when Jonathon visits the diner?
Once Jonathon arrives at the diner, he makes small talk about making the world more honest with the waitress, Bette. Also present in the diner is a married couple, Gary and Kate, who try to appear as though they are the picture-perfect couple. Judy is also in the diner and is unable to reach her girlfriend, Donna, whilst Mark waits in the diner before he has an interview with Gary and Kate’s company. And in the kitchen is Marsh, with whom Bette seemingly wants to have sexual relations.
Within minutes of the fifth episode, titled “24/7”, Jonathon starts to use the power of the ruby. By making everyone more honest, it uncovers shocking secrets from all those within the diner. It becomes clear that Gary and Kate are by no means a happy couple, and they start to belittle each other at every chance. After Bette tells Marsh that she wants to have sex with him, Marsh reveals that the only reason he comes to visit her is so he can have sex with her son.
As Jonathon continues to observe the effects of making the diner more honest, Kate and Mark have sex, Marsh and Gary have sex, and Bette and Judy have sex! However, when Gary catches Kate and Mark having sex, he attacks Mark. And as a result, Mark kills Gary. Bette realizes that Jonathon is behind everything that’s happening in the diner, but even so, everyone except Jonathon in the diner ends up dead. Marsh chops off his fingers, Judy slits her wrists, and Bette stabs herself in the eyes, among many more violent acts.
And although Jonathon had hoped to make the world more honest, it leads to his own downfall. Shortly afterward, Lord Morpheus arrives and turns Jonathon to ash.
