Summary
Lots of bad decisions and heart-to-hearts in “Mourning” lead to further drama and little healing.
This recap of Elite season 6, episode 5, “Mourning”, contains spoilers.
Things aren’t going especially well for Ivan. His dad is dead, for one thing. His relationship with Patrick is breaking down in the aftermath of that loss. And to make matters worse, Javi and the other boys are trying to pin the blame for Isadora’s sexual assault on him to divert the heat. She doesn’t even attend Cruz’s funeral.
Everyone seems to be struggling after Elite season 5, episode 4. Sara is still staying with Mencia but is being constantly hounded by Raul and is always on the verge of responding. Ivan is spiraling. Ari, too.
Elite season 6, episode 5 recap
Things are thrown for even more of a loop by the arrival of Didac’s brother Pau, who is there to expand the family business. We don’t get much clarity on what the business is, but the implication is that it’s a little unsavory. Didac, who clearly has eyes for Isadora but doesn’t want to pressure her into anything given recent circumstances, proposes holding a memorial for Cruz at Isadora’s playhouse to help Ivan heal and hopefully get him back to school.
Nico is struggling, too. After taking a girl home and trying to sleep with her using a sex toy, he decides he wants gender confirmation surgery, but his father – who we learn has carried out all his prior surgeries himself – refuses to operate again. This leads Nico into selling Hugo and Alex hormones that he steals from his dad’s office in the hopes of paying for his phalloplasty himself.
Meanwhile, Pau convinces Didac to give Javi a chance to atone given their longstanding relationship, but it’s contingent on Javi doing something to try and fix the mess he has made. That includes leaving Isadora a voicemail explaining that Ivan had nothing to do with her sexual assault. This makes her feel extremely guilty for having abandoned her best friend in his time of need. She’s finally able to talk with him, apologize, and help him go some way towards healing, mostly by convincing him to attend Cruz’s memorial, which ultimately turns out to be a bad idea, but we’ll get there momentarily.
In the meantime, Raul does his utmost to worm his way back into Sara’s life, blindsiding her at school and publicly apologizing to her on social media.
The breakdown of Ivan and Patrick’s relationship also continues apace, and it all comes to a head at Cruz’s memorial. There, we also get more development in Bilal and Rocio’s tentative romance – and why he’s dismissive of her, mostly because she thinks their having African heritage unites them when he thinks they have no common experience whatsoever – that begins to take more of a shape when he later intervenes in a racist man insinuating that she’s a prostitute. I’m still not exactly gripped by this relationship, but at least it has something of an interesting dynamic.
Of much more immediate concern is, as mentioned, Ivan and Patrick. Ari is in a similar downward spiral to Ivan because of her inability to grieve Samuel, especially after Patrick gives her the address to his grave site. This leads the two of them together in a bathroom stall for an intimate moment that Patrick catches the aftermath of. This doesn’t bode well for their relationship, and after a frank conversation, things are only made worse – Ivan, rightly or wrongly, blames Patrick for his father’s death.
At the end of the episode, we’re reminded that Ivan’s life hangs in the balance this season. If he dies, who will be responsible for that death?
