Where was the Netflix film Lady Chatterley’s Lover filmed? We discuss the popular streaming movie and its locations.

Who doesn’t love a steamy love affair, especially when it’s a period piece? Lady Chatterley’s Lover is about an unhappily married aristocrat who begins a torrid affair with the gamekeeper on her husband’s country estate, per the IMDB synopsis. The film is based on the book by D.H. Lawrence of the same name. Netflix has leaned on making strong book adaptations after the success of the To All the Boys trilogy. Book readers flock to Netflix because they know the next young adult fiction, romance, or even fantasy novel will be turned into something wonderful.

It’s always difficult to adapt a book to a screen, and the most important thing has to be the location setting for a period piece. It has to feel authentic to the period, and the cinematography has to add to the texture of it as well. The film also felt like a dream sequence with the way it was filmed for Lady Chatterley’s affair. Being unhappy can lead to some questionable decisions, and she ultimately turns to another man who does make her happy.

This novel is known to be controversial because of the sexual acts within the book. The novel was too sexually explicit back in 1928 when it was first published in Italy and in Paris the following year. It was banned in the UK after its Publishers, Penguin, were brought to trial under the Obscene Publications Act.

It’s interesting to see how far we’ve come in regard to censorship and what is considered obscene. Western culture has always been behind in sexual liberation, and we see that over the years through how Europeans have always been free with their sexuality and bodies. To know that a book like this could cause such controversy back then but not make a sound when it’s adapted says something about our culture today. Have we become so desensitized to sexuality on screen that something as steamy as this film doesn’t even faze the general audience anymore?

Director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre was able to capture the emptiness in Lady Chatterley and the sensuality of the affair quite well. It also comes down to the chemistry between Emma Corrin and Jack O’Connell, who are both electric in this. Their chemistry, combined with the romantic setting in north Wales, made for a raunchy exploration of this love affair.

Where was the Netflix film Lady Chatterley’s Lover filmed – a breakdown of locations

Chirk is located in north Wales and was the main setting for this film. Since the film takes place in a mansion and around the estate, it was quite simple to find something in the countryside for them to shoot.

Brynkinalt Hall

This is a historic mansion in Wrexham, which is the setting for the Chatterley mansion. The daily post reported that those familiar with the hall will recognize many rooms, grounds and gardens featured in the film. This home was completed by Sir Edward Trevor in 1612; it’s fascinating to see how the grounds have changed all those centuries ago.
