Summary

Strong writing spices up the drama in ways that keep the series worth watching weekly.

We recap the Hulu series Welcome to Chippendales season 1, episode 6, “February 31st,” which contains spoilers.

Last week on Welcome to Chippendales, we had an epic blow-up between Somen (Kumail Nanjiani) and Nick (Murray Bartlet) after Nick went on multiple shows and took all the credit for the opening of Chippendales. Then, at the end of last week, we saw that Somen challenged Ray’s (Robin de Jesus) loyalty by having him set fire to a club. So what happens between Somen and Nick? Does the lawsuit of the VIP cards haunt Chippendales? Let’s dive in.

Welcome to Chippendales season 1, episode 6 recap

The episode kicks off at Chippendales in New York, where a performance is happening with the crow LOUDLY roaring. Two people that turned Nick down earlier in the season admitted they were wrong about the club. As he brags about the show to Brooke Shields and Calvin Klein, Somen appears to break up the conversation. The conversation goes from fun to awkward in a hurry. It was a pissing contest between two men who can’t see past their egos.

The following day, Nick and Bradford are walking, and Nick mentions this is the third time that Somen has dropped in unannounced at the club. As Bradford tells him a story, he is interrupted by some people walking down the street and says, “Hey, Mr. Chippendale.” At the office, Murray mentions it’s time for him to open US Male, but Denise and Bradford tell him it’s a bad idea. At this moment, Bradford says, what about a world tour for Chippendales?

Somen missed his deposition AGAIN in LA, and his lawyer and Irene are pissed. Two more people have added themselves to the lawsuit against him, taking the number to thirteen. Irene reminds him they don’t have the money to take a hit if they lose the case. Next, as Somen goes over the numbers, he gets a call from the print place that says he needs to sign off on the print. He arrives at the print shop and signs off on the calendars, and when he does, he adds even more calendars to be printed.

When Somen arrives, Nick is sitting in his office, ready to talk to him. So, the duo has lunch together, and Nick pitches the tour idea to him. Nick tells him that he will get 50% of the profits and doesn’t have to pay a penny. Somen loves what he hears and shakes his hand, but Nick says to draw up some paperwork and send it over. However, Somen asks who needs lawyers, and they sign a napkin with all the details. I can’t imagine this not backfiring.

How does Irene take the news of Chippendales touring?

Somen comes home to tell Irene the big news about the deal he made with Nick, but first, he gives her a present. She opens it and says it probably costs a fortune and needs to be taken back. But he lets her know he has been making moves, including increasing the calendar number, and tells her about the tour. Irene says he’s got to stop doing things behind her back, but he ensures her that the numbers work.

After a conversation with the jeweler, Irene decides not to return the necklace. Furthermore, she shows up at the club and tells Somen that she doesn’t mind if he does shady stuff. He needs to do it better. Next, we see the duo filling up brand-name vodka bottles with cheaper Vodka. Finally, we see Irene break down Somen in a way that shows him what they need to do to get back on track. While she didn’t take the news well at first, she did everything in her power to ensure he knew they needed things to be done a certain way.

Welcome to Chippendales season 1, episode 6 ending explained

Exciting news, the calendars have arrived, and everyone is elated. However, upon opening them, they realize that every month in the calendar has the same 31 days without any of them being in order. Somen freaks out, calls the printing company, and finds that ALL of them have been printed. He has a flashback of when his father told him the number one rule of printing, “double check your proof.”

As they sit down together, Somen looks at Irene and says it’s time for them to file. The following morning, we see him reading the paper where it says Chippendales files for Chapter 11. Then, Ray walks in to find out if the club is shutting down, but Somen says everything is fine. Next, he hands Somen the mail and another check, but this time for 91 thousand dollars. Well, Somen comes up with the idea of sending Ray to check out the tour.

Somen starts to question whether or not they are giving them half. Sadly, for Somen, he tells Irene that there is no contract because he signed it on the napkin, causing her to freak out. Then, again, more bad news, his lawyer lets them know that the napkin is 100% a contract. While sulking over his mistake, his mother calls to freak out on him about Chippendales. She wants him to tell her it’s a lie, but he can’t. She says he was a failure there (in India) and a failure here (in America). As the episode closes, Somen breaks down in tears.
