This k-drama is a dark and disturbing crime thriller that follows the story of a murdered father and a heartbroken daughter that enters the police force under the control of the crime boss, so she can exact her revenge. At just seventeen, Yoon Je-woo witnesses her father being shot down. Just like Moon Dong-eun in The Glory, the story follows our main character’s road to vengeance.

Rugal (2020)

Based on a webtoon, this science fiction adventure series follows Kang Gi-beom, a young police detective whose wife is murdered by a terrorist group, unfortunately named ARGOS. In her effort to retaliate against his betrayal, a vicious battle ensues between the two as they both seek to exact revenge on each other. The World of the Married is currently known as the highest-rated show on Korean public TV after garnering a viewer rate of 28.37% during its final episode, although it was often criticized for its depiction of sex and violence.

The Innocent Man (2012)

When Kang Ma-ru’s older neighbor and first love, Han Jae-hee, decides that she values money over love, she leaves him to marry a rich CEO. He grows up years later bitter and resentful and becomes a heartless playboy out for vengeance. In order to get back at the girl who broke his heart, he romances Seo Eun-gi, a cold, business-oriented chaebol heiress who also happens to be the daughter of the man Jae-hee married. This twisted story of misplaced love and allegiance is full of twists and turns as revenge starts to take its toll on everyone.

Monster (2016)

Lee Guk-choel, a young privileged heir from a rich family, is the victim of a planned car accident that kills his parents and leaves him blind. Years later, he gets the chance to regain his sight and takes advantage of the surgery to change his appearance as well. With a new face and identity, Guk-choel, under the name of Kang Ki-tan, sets up his own company to gain revenge against the people who ruined his life.

This sprawling series would run for fifty episodes and follow an intricate web of revenge and deceit. With long-running plot lines and revelations, this show had a fascinating lead that would often leave you wondering about the true nature of its characters. Violent and underrated, this is a show that fans of revenge stories need to watch.

Lawless Lawyer (2018)

Doctor Prisoner (2018)

Revenge is once again on the menu in this thirty-two-episode medical drama that finds a skilled doctor being accused of medical malpractice. Forced to find a new position, he ends up taking a job in a prison, but his plan is to clear his name of the charges that cost him his job and to climb his way to the top of the ranks in his new job. This intense and cleverly scripted drama can appear dense and complicated, but the performance from Namkoong Min as Na Yi-je manages to hold the series together.

Tempted (2018)

This is a more romantic story than others in the list, but as you would expect, there is revenge as its central theme. Su-Ji’s boyfriend breaks up with her and casts aspirations against both her and her mother, saying they used him to achieve social standing. She does not take this attack well and gets some friends together to plan their revenge against him. However, things don’t go to plan, and relationships start to unravel among friends. This K-Drama seems to be channeling Cruel Intentions here, but if you enjoy that kind of thing, this might be for you.

Vincenzo (2021)

Vincenzo is a South Korean-born Mafia lawyer in Italy that flees to his homeland after he finds himself caught in between two warring crime families. While there, he sets out to reclaim a building owned by the Babel Group, where he had previously hidden 1.5 tons of gold for a Chinese tycoon who recently passed away.

Vincenzo eventually meets and teams up with Hong Cha-young, a lawyer seeking vengeance for his father’s death at the hands of the same company he’s going after. This is a more character-driven story of revenge and intrigue that was hugely popular upon its release. The tightly written plot and performances elevate this show to one of the best new k-dramas out there, and the mix of humor, violence, and drama keeps this show riveting.

Secret Love (2013)

The last entry on our list of revenge-based k-dramas is a real thriller. Do-hoon is involved in a hit and run that leaves a girl dead. He then begs his girlfriend to take the rap for him. Out of love and loyalty, she does, and of course, ends up in jail, and of course, while she is there, he dumps her.

This is another series that focuses on the nature of human beings and the fluidity of the human persona. Although revenge is examined, this gripping drama also looks at love, loyalty, heartbreak, and absolution. Criticized in retrospect, the show is ten years old now, this may not sit well with some viewers, but it is still a fascinating look at the nature of relationships and bad choices.
