In Your Place or Mine, two friends live on opposite coasts. Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) and Peter (Ashton Kutcher) went on one date and then decided that they would be friends. However, those feelings of a possible relationship ever happening between them never went away. Peter lives in New York, while Debbie lives in Los Angeles with her son Jack (Wesley Kimmel). Debbie had been struggling with being a single mother and trying to find some time for herself, so Peter was going to fly out to Los Angeles to help her out. In doing so, he suggests that she stays at his place in New York to experience something different.
It’s funny for someone who lives in Los Angeles to not take risks and make safe bets as Debbie does; there’s a whole field of opportunities. Not only is Los Angeles a place of opportunities but so is New York City. So for her to go to Peter’s area takes her out of her comfort zone. Debbie and Peter also surround themselves with people who do have their best interests at heart and when they flip locations, those friends give the other better advice than they could have imagined. Sometimes you just need a fresh perspective and a new set of eyes to really read the situation you’re in only to help you decide what’s best for you.

New York City, New York
Peter lives in New York City as a consultant and is incredibly wealthy. At first, he wanted to become a writer and that’s why the friendship between him and Debbie worked so well. However, he made the bold choice to go in a different direction because he knew it would be impossible for him to have any security with being a writer. So he then lives this lavish lifestyle that is different than what he planned with Debbie.
New York City is the place to be in order for your dreams to come true and Peter feels like he hasn’t achieved that yet because he’s not with Debbie. To have the backdrop of New York City to aid Debbie in her search for love, while also realizing how Peter feels about her is a perfect balance.
Los Angeles, California
Debbie lives in Los Angeles with her son Jack who has been on the hockey team for a while. She has been helping him with his dream and with raising him all on her own. Instead of becoming a writer herself, she chose the safe route (the opposite of what Peter did) and became an accountant. She needed a steady job to raise a family and the edginess that was once there with Peter faded. Debbie wanted to try her best to get out of this funk she was in and that’s why Peter helped her out.
When Peter switches and makes his way to Los Angeles to spend time with Jack, he understands how different his life could be. By helping Jack and being in Debbie’s world, there’s a sense of security that he hasn’t felt before and he feels like he’s actually doing something meaningful with his life by helping Jack out.
At one time or another, Jack realized that the meaningless relationships he was in did not fill the void he felt. He wanted to live for someone else and he learned not to be selfish because he had to take responsibility for another human being.
The contrast between Los Angeles and New York City is definitely felt in this film, especially with how the city feels. And of course, how the people act within it.
