We recap the Netflix series You Season 4 Episode 10, “The Death of Jonathan Moore,” which contains spoilers and explains the Ending of Part 2.

We’ve made it to the You season 4 grand finale. Joe Goldberg (played by Penn Badgley) is either the luckiest man alive or television’s greatest villain. The season 4 finale is touching, shocking, and infuriating at the same time.

You Season 4 Episode 10 Recap

The episode starts with Joe dealing with the aftermath of Marienne’s passing. She left him a note asking that he leaves her where she’ll be found. He chooses a nice park bench for her final resting place.

As Joe’s teaching one last class at the university, he learns that Rhys’s body has been found in the woods. The news concerns Hallucination Rhys as he believes Tom Lockwood plans on double-crossing Joe and letting him go to jail for the murder. But Joe doesn’t seem to care. He’s too busy writing his suicide note, to Hallucination Rhys’s dismay.

A text from Kate interrupts Joe’s argument with himself. She’s all torn up from her conversation with Tom and is breaking up with Jonathan. Kate explains that her father has always kept tabs on her and controlled her. He would hire people to follow her, drive away all her boyfriends, and even have a file documenting everything she did, including when she was intimate with someone or when she got her periods. Tom Lockwood is the type of deranged stalker Joe would be if he had the resources.

Despite Joe’s best efforts to console her, it looks like Kate’s defeated and accepts her father owning her. For the first time this season, Joe and Hallucination Rhys agree – Tom Lockwood must die.

Does Tom Lockwood die?

Using Kate’s phone, Joe sets up a meeting with his future (late) father-in-law at a conveniently remote workshop where Tom’s building a plane.

At the workshop, Joe confronts Tom about Rhys’s body and the DNA found on it. Of course, Tom tries dismissing his concerns. Joe gets the upper hand and ties Tom to a chair. There’s one point when Mr. Lockwood’s bodyguard returns, and it looks like he may stand a chance at surviving, but Joe quickly overpowers the guard and stabs him in the neck.

Poor Tom tries talking out of this one, but Joe’s unmoved. No amount of money or warnings about Kate’s true nature can dissuade Joe from choking Tom to death with a plastic bag. He then re-arranges the crime scene to look like the poor bodyguard did it. Hallucination Rhys is happy with their handy work, and Joe seems pretty pleased with himself.

But Joe still hasn’t changed his mind. Early that morning, he walks himself to a bridge and throws himself into the Thames. Hallucination Rhys tries stopping him. Joe admits he despises that part of himself. He doesn’t want to end up murdering Kate like all his previous loves. “I can’t do that again,” a tearful Joe tells Hallucination Rhys. The two embrace and Joe throws Rhys in before jumping himself. While underwater, his last thoughts are with Kate. “That’s all that matters. You. Just You.”

Is Marienne alive?

Throughout the episode, Nadia tells Edward everything she knows about Professor Moore. She tries showing him the cage, but by the time they return to the basement, any trace of it is already gone.

In what looks suspiciously like an epilogue (but it’s not), Nadia drops the truth about Marienne on Edward. She’s still alive. It turns out that the two women had a plan B should anything go wrong with their kill Joe plot. Nadia gave Marienne beta-blockers, which slowed her heart enough for Joe to be fooled into thinking she was dead. (I don’t know if that’s how beta-blockers work… but this is You, suspension of disbelief comes with the territory!).

Nadia then followed Joe when he went to leave Marienne on that park bench. As soon as Joe was gone, she injected Marienne with… something to revive her. And now the nightingale and her little chick have been happily reunited.

Unsurprisingly, Nadia is not ready to let things go. She wants Edward’s help to break into Joe’s apartment, so they’ll have undisputed evidence of guilt for the police. Yes, it’s a dangerous quest for both of them, but Edward wants to help because he cares for Nadia.

Is Joe Goldberg dead?

No. Joe is not dead. Police were patrolling the bridge and saw him jump. They pulled him out, and he woke up in the hospital. A grieving Kate visits him, and he finally confesses to everything, including the murders. (He didn’t confess to killing Tom, though).

Kate has inherited all her father’s fortune and influence and wants to be with Joe. The two think they can “keep each other good.”

You Season 4 Part 2 Ending Explained

After breaking into Joe’s apartment, Nadia finds the box of stalkerish souvenirs Joe took from the real Rhys. She rushes out to meet up with Edward but instead finds Joe waiting for her. Nadia is scared. And she should be.

But first, Joe’s voiceover explains what happened to the rest of the characters. Blessing and Sophie bought Sunry House and even created it in the Metaverse, so rich people could enjoy the club’s exclusivity online.

During his hunting trip in Germany, Roald accidentally shoots a friend, but his wealthy family keeps it out of the papers. Connie left rehab after just nine days, and he’s still living his life in a permanent state of drunkenness. However, Lady Pheobe left London after her ordeal and now teaches English to children in Thailand.

How does You Season 4 end for Joe Goldberg?

As for Joe… Well, he’s now dating Kate, is filthy rich, extremely powerful, and once again lives under his real name. Why wouldn’t he? He can afford a whole team of cyber specialists to make his record look cleaner than Mother Teresa’s. He even got Henry back. Money fixes everything, and even Joe admits that if he wanted to commit murders from now on, with Kate’s resources, he could easily get away with it.

Case in point, Edward’s death. Yes, when Joe approached Nadia outside his London flat, he had slit Edward’s throat and framed Nadia for it. She’s yet to say a single word to her defense since the encounter and is now serving time in prison for the murder.

Whatever moral compass Joe pretended to have up until now is gone. Edward was innocent and likable. Despite the empty promises of “being good” Joe and Kate made to each other, if this series gets a season 5, we’ll likely see a whole new level of evil from our favorite mild-mannered serial killer.

The death of Edward and imprisonment of Nadia left a sour taste in my mouth this series which is derivative should not have ended that way.. since joe already knew he was a serial killer by the way the so-called twist showing him to have continued and him being two people is rather reminiscent of Fight Club
..which made more sense because the hero didn’t really know what his problem was… and remember a beautiful mind?
