Liaison is the first-ever British-French co-production for the streaming site Apple TV+. A spy thriller series created by French writer Virginie Brac, which is directed by Stephen Hopkins (24 and Predator 2) and consists of six installments in total.
The series follows private secretary Alison Rowdy, played by Eva Green (Casino Royale and Penny Dreadful), and French mercenary Gabriel Delage, played by Vincent Cassel (Black Swan and La Haine), who find themselves caught up in a plot to stop future terrorism and cyber-attacks from taking place in London.
While the British government attempts to stop these ensuing attacks, the French government is after Syrian hackers Samir (Aziz Dyab) and Walid (Marco Horanieh), who have important, top-secret information on a USB drive.
The intelligence they have acquired includes information on future attacks in London and details on the perpetrators themselves. Gabriel pursues the hackers halfway across Europe and is soon reacquainted with his ex, Alison Rowdy.
She’s caught up in political diplomacy, as the UK wants to sign a new cyber security deal with the European Commission. As their two lives collide, their missions bring up old wounds and rekindle their old desires.
This fast-paced espionage thriller was poorly received by critics, but it has garnered high ratings for the streaming site.
With such a mixed reaction, will Apple be quick to cancel the series after one season or eager to renew the production for a second outing?
Will there be a Season 2 of Liaison – renewed or canceled status
There has been no word yet on whether Apple will renew Liaison for a second season or if they are canceling the show after just one batch of episodes.
As I mentioned above, critics were decidedly negative towards the spy thriller. It currently holds a rotten rating of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning that less than half of the reviews published on the site were favorable to the show.
It has been summed up as ‘tedious’ and ‘underwhelming,’ which I agree wholeheartedly with. This feels like a massive misfire for the company, with great star power but a convoluted, messy script and a lack of tension or drama overall.
Yet it has its fans. The series is consistently in the top ten charts for Apple TV+, meaning there is a fan base.
Most sites would happily accept that if it is well-liked, then it will be renewed, but Apple has in the past controversially been seen to side with the critics over the general public. Shantaram was a similarly pitched series, hated by critics but well-received by viewers. That was canceled after just one season, leading to much anger online.
I would not be surprised to see Liaison go the same way as Shantaram, as Apple continues to move away from its critically panned content, pushing forwards with its more prestigious, award-winning brand instead.
As always, we will keep you posted on any updates in the pending renewal of Liaison.
Loved season 1 of Liaison! Delage and Allison were so great. Loved her in James Bond and the actor playing Delage is so versatile. Loved seeing him play a versatile non traditional spy type role. I loved the diversity in the cast and that everything was messy, just like the real world.
Sorry, It is not tedious, it is fast moving .. critics: learn to like subtitles
