Hulu’s latest psychological drama series Saint X opens with “A Lovely Nowhere.” The premiere episode uses multiple timelines to introduce viewers to its mystery plot about a suspicious death in paradise and the fallout of this shocking event in the present day.
We begin with flashbacks set in the picturesque Indigo Bay, while in the present timeline, our protagonist Emily (Alycia Debnam-Carey), is forced to relive her traumatic past.
Saint X Season 1 Episode 1 Recap
The hook of this mystery is introduced in the opening moments of Saint X. A hotel worker called Gogo hides from the police and a search party on the idyllic resort of Indigo Bay in the Caribbean.
It’s implied that Gogo is the suspect in the disappearance of a missing girl, who happens to be dead, floating naked in the waters near a waterfall.
Before this tragedy, we are introduced to the Thomas family, who are vacationing at this luxury resort. The parents, Bill and Mia, are joined by their daughters, Alison and Claire. They unpack and take in the beauty of the surrounding area.
The following day, hotel employee Edwin pitches possible excursions to the family, promoting a mysterious island that comes with its very own waterfall and haunting myth, called Faraway Cay.
It is quickly established that Edwin is a bit of a womanizer and that Gogo, his sidekick, is the quieter of the two, with a partner (Sara) and child to provide for.
Who does Alison flirt with?
During a volleyball match, the male guests all try to flirt with Princeton student Alison. Later that night, Alison meets in private with a Yale student called Tyler. These two teens flirt with one another, yet Edwin also has his eyes on Alison.
Further flashbacks reveal the possible consequences of these flirtations. A detective speaks with Alison’s parents, informing them that Alison went out drinking with two men the night before. The men were arrested for drink-driving, but Alison is still missing. Bill immediately accuses Gogo and Edwin.
Who are the prime suspects in Alison’s disappearance?
These two (Edwin and Gogo) are the prime suspects in Alison’s disappearance, although the premiere also puts forth a handful of other contenders at the hotel. A teenager called Olivia appears to be jealous of all the attention Alison is receiving. And then an older man called Ethan, who seems envious of Alison and Tyler’s flirtatious interactions.
In the present, viewers follow Emily, an environmental documentaries editor, who has just moved into an apartment in Brooklyn with her boyfriend, Josh. Emily takes a taxi cab one day and realizes that the driver is Gogo, now working under the full name of Clive Richardson.
Why is Clive called Gogo?
Another timeline of flashbacks reveals how Clive got his nickname Gogo. As a child, he had a stutter, and when he would ask to ‘go’ to the toilet in class, he would stutter and say ‘go-go’ instead.
This timeline also establishes how Gogo and Edwin became friends in their youth.
Who is Emily Thomas?
Seeing Gogo in the flesh triggers painful memories for Emily, and it is soon revealed that Emily Thomas is actually Claire, Alison’s younger sister. It was Alison that died on that vacation in the Caribbean all those years ago.
Emily decides to leave her phone in the taxi so that she can contact Gogo at a later date. She wants to confront the man after all.
Saint X Season 1 Episode 1 Ending Explained
Emily tells her friend Sunita about the awful encounter after calming her from her panic attack. Sunita mentions that Gogo and Edwin had raped and killed Alison, but Emily replies by saying that Gogo is the only one who knows the actual truth.
Nobody else knows what happened that night. The plot thickens.
After this encounter, Emily is cold and argumentative with her boyfriend. The painful memories brought up her traumatic past. She eventually apologizes to Josh and then phones her mobile.
In the final moments of the premiere, Emily asks to meet with Gogo to collect her phone. Her elaborate plan has worked. She will meet Gogo the following day at a restaurant in the city.
