Summary
A heavily anime-inspired outing feels very on-brand while also delivering some welcome moral complexity.
This recap of Star Wars: Visions Season 2 Episode 5, “Journey to the Dark Head”, contains spoilers.
“Journey to the Dark Head” has an anime vibe in its visuals, but it also feels like one of the most quintessentially on-brand installments in many ways, from its light/dark dichotomy through the Jedi and the Sith to its lightsaber duels and character banter.
But there’s a little more beneath the surface here. Like the premiere episode “Sith”, it’s a short that could easily be expanded into a proper story, or at least a little sequel.
Star Wars: Visions Season 2 Episode 5 Recap
The plot concerns a young girl raised in a temple on a distant planet among a community of seers, blessed with visions of the future but cursed not to share them with the Jedi.
The girl, a mechanic, teams up with a young Jedi teetering on the Dark Side after the death of his master to take down a statue in the temple bristling with dark energy.
The big centerpiece here is undoubtedly an impressively animated speeder chase combined with a lightsaber duel. The action combined with the majesty of the setting and the back-and-forth patter is where I found myself most comfortably at home.
Star Wars: Visions Season 2 Episode 5 Ending Explained
There’s more thematic backbone than that, though, with light and darkness tangling together in a vague payoff to a vision of the future.
The takeaway about prognostication seems to be that it’s futile. What will be will be, and it will inevitably be more complex than whatever you expect.
