This article contains major spoilers for the ending of Muted Season 1 Episode 6.

The hilariously silly but gratingly self-serious Spanish thriller Muted, or El Silencio, is a six-part Netflix series revolving around an ill-advised and ethically horrifying experiment.

The subject is Sergio, a young man who was imprisoned for killing both of his parents by throwing them out of the window of a high-rise apartment. Since then he has never spoken to anyone about the event, his selective mutism forming the title of the series and, it turns out, justification for a bizarre scientific study in which he’s released from juvenile detention and allowed to return to the scene of the crime, only to be obsessively monitored through hidden cameras and microphones by a psychiatrist and a team of investigators.

Ana is the psychiatrist keeping an obsessive eye on Sergio, though her personal connection to the case is immediately obvious from the get-go. She’s being overseen by a cop named Cabrera who also has clearly ulterior motives.

And then there’s Marta, Sergio’s prison pen pal who has maintained contact with him throughout his incarceration and with whom Sergio begins a relationship shortly after his release.

These various competing plotlines all come together in the show’s finale.

Muted Season 1 Ending Explained

Did Sergio kill his parents?

The show’s most essential question is whether Sergio really killed his parents, and this is revealed in a double twist. The short answer, though, is yes.

Sergio’s version of events is that his mother was abusive and forcefully experimented on him and his sister, Noa. In an effort to protect Noa he recalls attacking his mother, but is sure that his father accidentally pushed her to her death and subsequently committed suicide thanks to the guilt.

However, it’s Noa herself, the only witness to the event, who eventually reveals that it was indeed Sergio who killed both of their parents. His mother was never abusive – she was a little emotionally cold and standoffish, but she loved her children and, far from experimenting on Sergio with the drugs, was actually trying to keep him balanced enough that he didn’t become a danger to himself and others.

She failed, obviously.

What is Ana’s connection to Sergio?

It is obvious throughout the season that Ana sees Sergio as much more than a lab rat, and is gradually revealed that she sees a lot of herself in him.

Ana is, similar to Sergio, unable to fit in. She’s erratic and feels apart from everyone else, including those closest to her. Her life is, in essence, a performance of normality, and in Sergio, she sees an authenticity and a sense of potential connection that she finds compelling.

She takes it too far, though. She becomes increasingly unstable and weirdly horny about the whole thing, which doesn’t go unnoticed. In her obsession with Sergio, she tries to force a connection that isn’t really there.

Does Sergio kill Ana?

The end of Muted is ambiguous, though the implication is that Sergio killed Ana by pushing him from the same balcony as his parents.

However, there’s also a chance that the inverse is true, and Ana pushed him to his death, perhaps as a means to try and “become” him in a strange way.

Either way, we know both Sergio and Ana go to the balcony together. And we know that one remains standing there while the other plummets to their death. The lack of clarity should keep people talking.

If you look at the pictures, the person with black pants is the one who falls of the balcony which is Sergio, not Ana who was wearing white pants.
It is ironic as she said she will never hurt him as she loved him

Ugh, I thought you guys were going to give me an answer. Are we meant to decide our own conclusion? They made Ana’s hair just long enough that you cannot tell from a shadow (which is how everything looks by the camera view), which one plummeted to their death or, whether the second person went over afterwards. All I know is there better be a season 2 because I NEED to know which one actually went over. Was Sergio that good of a narcissist that he coaxed Ana into suicide. Narcissists are good at that. Or did Ana actually tame the beast that Sergio is causing h to kill himself? So many questions, and no true answer in sight. Boo on you Netflix. Boo on you.

And I definitely believe that in that moment of calm and clarity, Sergio committed suicide, and Anna was there to comfort him in his last few moments Dash there was no question he would be returning to prison, and I think a combination of that, and the guilt let him to take his own life– that’s why the person falling was wearing dark pants

I call BS on this ending!!!! The person plummeting from the balcony actually looks like Sergio at one moment then Ana at another moment as the body twists and turns in the air. One second you can see the pale arms of Ana and then the next moment The dark clothing of Sergio so we are left with the age old question WTF happened?????

Sergios mother was CLEARLY abusive. Noa confirmed it, and so did the Noa’s video in which their mother was verbally abusing him and forcing him to take medication (that he was never prescribed and caused him to have medical episodes) against his will. Hopefully Netflix will renew the series, but I dont have high hope . I was so sure they would jump off the roof together hahaha.
