We have reached the back half of season one of High Desert. With Peggy (Patricia Arquette) hot on the trail to find out what happened to Guru Bob’s wife, Dona (Tonya Glanz), she enlists Denny (Matt Dillon) to help her with the case.
The entire operation doesn’t go as planned, but Peggy ends up one step closer with a massive piece of evidence.
High Desert Season 1 Episode 5 Recap
We start with Peggy and Denny collecting the silver he promised would be there. The two reminiscence about old times together. In the middle of that happening, the people who live in the house get home, but the duo makes it out, but not without Denny dropping a bunch of silver on the way out the door.
How much do Denny and Peggy get for the silver?
When pitching the idea to Peggy, Denny promised they could make nearly 20 grand for the silver. However, when they take it to the pawn shop, they only get five grand, and Peggy is angry.
Peggy arrives to talk to Bruce and give him the money to get him back on his feet. He is pleased about her trying to help and even gets emotional. After this, Bruce sends her on her first gig to find out whether or not a woman is cheating on her husband. Of course, she talks Carol into doing the job for her. Carol warns Peggy that she is worried about her working with Denny again, but Peggy plays it off a little.
Peggy is working on the case of Guru Bob’s missing/murdered wife with Denny. When they arrive at Guru Bob’s, Peggy tells Denny to let her run point on the case. Denny gets slightly jealous of Guru Bob when he pats Peggy down. Well, Denny calls out Guru Bob about the painting being fake. After much back and forth, Denny agrees to purchase the artwork for 1 million dollars on Kachel’s behalf. Before they leave, they want to know who the forger is.
So, just when Denny tries to take charge by making Peggy go outside with the dog Judy, she lets Denny’s dog off the leash and comes back in just in time for Denny trying to coax Guru Bob into thinking Peggy is a bad person. They continue to push Guru Bob about who did the paintings, and he finally reveals that his wife did the image.
What led to Bob having a breakdown on the air?
Bob tells a story to Denny and Peggy about something that happened to him when he used to work as a news anchor. One day, he walked the halls and said something to someone, and they didn’t even react. He told the man to smile the next time he talked to him. Moments later, while waiting to get food at a taco truck, the same man jumped off the top of the building and landed on the taco truck with blood all over him. All of this led to his massive breakdown on the air, his getting fired, and Dona leaving him.

What did Judy throw up?
When Denny and Peggy leave Guru Bob’s, the two have a big-time argument because Denny tried to take over the operation. While arguing, Judy (the dog) is hacking and eventually throws up. Upon Peggy’s investigation, they realize it is a finger that looks like a woman’s. As Denny is grossed out, Peggy is happy as she sees dollar signs.
