We discuss whether there will be a Season 2 of the Netflix K-Drama series King the Land and its renewed or canceled status.
Set to a lavish backdrop of a luxury hotel, King the Land is a romantic comedy that, while entirely willing to embrace genre tropes to the point the story undeniably has a sense of familiarity to it, certainly still stands out to the viewer.
At the heart of the show is an initially unlikely couple (in this case, a rich heir and a concierge) defying romantic obstacles to live happily together, something which is not necessarily an unfamiliar plot.
Yet the tales of power struggles, friendship, career progression, estrangement, and family feuds packed within the general rom-com formula all add crucial layers to ensure proceedings do not stay one-dimensional.
Viewers have generally responded well to King the Land, too. Its Nielsen Rating has stayed consistently high and peaked with a sizeable 12.317% of the domestic South Korean audience tuning in.
Additionally, the show has stayed in Netflix’s global top 10 for six consecutive weeks, where it has often peaked at the top spot in terms of viewership.
Between July 17 and 23, the rom-com clocked in at 4.7 million views and 65,100,000 hours viewed, showing just how popular King the Land is worldwide. With that being said, it is worth noting some viewers were turned off by the portrayal of Prince Samir, which led to an apology from the show’s creators.
Here at Ready Steady Cut, we gave the first season of King the Land a 3.5/5 rating, saying: “Flanked by the vibrant backdrop of a hotel, and brought to richer life with its strong leading cast, this is something worth at least a try from fans of unconventional love stories.”

As is the norm for K-Dramas, it is likely that King the Land will not have a season two. The show’s story looks tailor-made for the typical formula of a one-and-done 16-episode run, and the storylines currently reaching a climax will logically wrap up neatly in the finale.
Of course, there’s an argument to be made that another chapter centered around Gu Won running the hotel with his employee-focused mindset at the forefront, which also shows his comfortable relationship with Sa-rang, who herself would still be heavily involved as a regarded concierge, would be entertaining, but that might be too far of an extension past what we’ve seen transpire, as good as one may conceive it to be.
Nevertheless, you can never say never. King the Land has been a definite ratings hit both domestically and abroad. It certainly contains mileage in terms of its setting and likable lead characters, and there’s definite room to create new storylines going forward if there’s a need to.
Still, though, we’d predict this series won’t return for a season two and that next week’s finale will be the last time audiences are taken into the luxury King Hotel to be entertained.
