This article reveals when The Winter King Season 1 Episode 3 is back on MGM+, but it also reveals some plot details from previous episodes, so read at your own risk.
Okay, so, where is the latest episode of The Winter King?
The MGM+ original series, adapted from Bernard Cornwell‘s reworking of the Arthurian legend in The Warlord Chronicles, was shaping up to be the next big thing for fans of lightly fantastical historical fiction, especially in the absence of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, not to mention big fantasy IP like The Rings of Power.
And after a relatively staid premiere episode, things were really heating up after Episode 2, which included babies being shanked, outright massacres, grim sexual assaults, and the return of our erstwhile hero, who has barely been seen for the first couple of hours of a show ostensibly about him.
The third episode should be out right now, and it isn’t. But why? And when can we expect to see it return? Here’s everything we know.
When will The Winter King Season 1 Episode 3 be back on MGM+?
We’ve got good and bad news for you. The good news is that we know when The Winter King Episode 3 will air. The bad news is that it isn’t until Sunday, September 17.
UPDATE (06/09/2023): Good news! According to MGM+, The Winter King Episode 3 will now air on Sunday, September 10, in lieu of re-airing the first two episodes.
As for the “why”, that’s a more difficult question to answer. To be honest, it isn’t entirely clear. And after the show was really developing a head of steam, it doesn’t seem like the smartest move.
So, will anything to do with The Winter King air on September 3? The short answer is no. Next Sunday, though, is a slightly different story.
On Sunday, September 10, MGM+ will re-air Episode 1 and Episode 2, starting from 9 pm ET/PT. This, one suspects, is an effort to make sure that fans don’t forget about the show during its hiatus, and are fully up to speed on the latest happenings by the time the third episode rolls around on the 17th.

What might the next episode be about?
After Gungleus’s raid on Avalon, we know that he’s especially gunning for Prince Mordred, who was cunningly saved by the actions of Morgan. As long as Mordred lives, there’s a legitimate claim to the throne, and more to the point, Arthur is back in the picture, who despite his bastard status is nonetheless the child of the late King Uther.
There’s also the matter of Nimue’s powers to address since they’ve been on the fritz since Gungleus sexually assaulted her, but nonetheless do still seem to be working. This, and Merlin’s prognostications about Mordred’s impending evildoing paint a pretty grim picture of the kingdom’s future, but that’s a matter for another day, I suppose.
In the meantime, you can expect Arthur and his surviving allies to rally against Gungleus and his forces, probably with a mind to taking back Avalon.
I call bs. All the people that got MGM+ for 99 cents on prime day ends the 13th . It’s so all those people not paying full price will sign up. Coincidence it’s on hiatus until after the promotion ends
Another likely scenario is you don’t want to premiere an episode during a holiday weekend. Resulting in low ratings. As for the following week you’re competing with the NFL opening week. Which I assume would be a large part of your audience.
Can’t be bothered with this after waiting. What has the3 programme Covid or something.
Therre’s plenty of other things to watch so bye bye bye Arthur.
Dropping MGM, ridiculous.
I hate BS! I pay good money and expect things to be shown when they are advertised! I love Bernard Cromwell and the Last Kingdom was the BEST fiction based on fact I’ve ever seen-regardless, this effort to grab more viewers is a cheap shot and I would rather watch it down the road than be sucked up by this stuff! Bad move MGM!
