Episode 3 of Sex Education season 4 reveals more about the history between O and Ruby (Mimi Keene). A rift is forming in Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Eric’s (Ncuti Gatwa) relationship. Maeve (Emma Mackey) gets some bad news that’s taking her back to Moordale.

Episode 3 starts with a flashback of Ruby and O (who back then was going by Sarah) as children at camp. Ruby was ruthlessly bullied by the other kids for being poor, but O befriended her. That night, Ruby wet the bed, and O caught her trying to clean up but promised to keep the secret.

Where is Otis going?

In present-day Sex Education-land, Otis is wearing a transparent pink shirt as he’s joining Eric later for a LQBTQ+ night out. But first, Otis goes to Ruby, where the two make a video for his campaign. At first, Otis does terribly in front of the camera, but Ruby finds a way to coach that inner therapist all those Moordale students seemed to trust.

Meanwhile, Eric joins Roman, Abbi, and Aiesha so they can all get ready together for the night out.

Jean goes to a class for mommies and babies and overshares at the introduction bit, making all the other mothers uncomfortable.

Adam and Michael’s first driving lesson

Adam and Michael’s first driving lesson starts with Adam hitting a stop sign. But Michael soon apologizes for losing his temper, and the two continue their lesson. After, they share a picnic and even bond a little. Adam talks about his break-up with Eric, and Michael mentions how his colleague Gloria asked him on a date.

At the caravan park, Isaac is helping Aimee find her inner artist. The two open up to one another, and just as they’re about to kiss, Isaac’s brother walks in and ruins the moment.

Who does Joanne meet at the bank?

Joanne goes to the bank trying to get a loan. The bank manager is none other than Dan, Jean’s former fling who is more than likely Joy’s real father. Approving a loan for Joanne would be impossible, given her lack of credit score or income, but he is interested in taking her on a date.

What happens with Viv and Beau?

To Viv’s disappointment, Beau brings a mate over for their study session. Not to worry, as soon as Beau’s friend leaves, he confesses his feelings, and the two share a kiss.

What did Jackson’s GP say about his lump?

Jackson goes to see his GP about that lump. To Jackson’s dread, the doctor orders more tests.  He referred him to an ultrasound and asked if he had a family history of cancer. As Jackson’s father was a sperm donor, he doesn’t know if that’s the case.

Why did Eric uninvite Otis from the party?

At the pool party, Eric tells his new friends that he doesn’t think Otis fully understands him. And when Otis calls him to say he’s ready to party, Eric awkwardly tells his friend not to bother.  Seeing he’s upset over getting uninvited, Ruby invites Otis to stay and hang out with her and her dad. Otis is understandably confused about Ruby suddenly being nice to him.

Why is Ruby helping Otis take O down?

But Ruby has an ulterior motive. In another flashback, we learn that O ended up telling everyone at camp about Ruby’s nocturnal accident. Poor Ruby was constantly bullied for the incident until the end of primary school.

Who got the internship with Thomas?

In the U.S., both Maeve and Tyrone are disappointed to learn that neither of them won that internship with Thomas. The sought-after position went to Ellen, and there’s suspicion she may have gotten the job because of her parent’s deep pockets. When Maeve asks Mr. Molloy for feedback, he tears her down and flat-out tells her she doesn’t have what it takes to be a writer.

What does Eric do at the party?

At the party, Eric is having the time of his life and experimenting with drugs. He even hooks up with a hot boy from church.

Cal learns that Aisha is already dating someone. So they leave the party and approach Roman to ask about his top surgery.

They are disappointed to hear that it might take a few years before they can get transition treatment on the NHS. Roman was lucky to get his top surgery privately.

Otis and Ruby fall asleep in her bed, which may or may not complicate things between him and Maeve.

After his wild night out, Eric wakes up a little worse for wear and declines to go to church, to his mother’s disappointment.

Why does Maeve return to Moordale?

When Otis gets home, he sees several missed calls from Maeve. As it turns out, her Mum had an overdose, and she’s in pretty bad shape.  It might be the worst possible circumstances, but Maeve is flying back to Moordale.
