Summary

With the aftermath of Karen’s death in full motion, there’s plenty for the Liars to do. Yet, at times, they come across as quite annoying and cheesy. Even so, the plot, for the most part, remains strong. However, is anyone else wondering whether Kelly is really Kelly?

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin season 1, episode 3 recap

Kelly sobs over Karen’s body as the Liars can barely take in what they’ve just witnessed. At home, Kelly tells her father that maybe Karen killed herself. Meanwhile, the events surrounding Karen’s death prove to have similarities to Angela’s death, aka the girl who died in 1999. Imogen reveals that the letter A was written in the bathroom when her Mom, Davie, died, shortly after Karen brought the letter addressed to Davie. And now Imogen has to know whether it’s all connected. After Imogen talks to Kelly, it makes Imogen feel sick. Has she sensed that Kelly is really Karen?

Sheriff Beasley accuses the Liars of being responsible for Karen’s death. And when he claims that the video they screened led to her death, the Liars say they will lawyer up. Or at least involve their parents. Later on that week, the five Liars find that a newspaper labels them as bullying Karen to death. And this leads to Faran getting removed from dance class. Shawn blows off Noa; he tells her that she lied to him by not telling him about the tape and even speculates whether she’s lying about not “using” again. After Imogen uncovers a newspaper article about the body of a minor being found in an old harbor warehouse, she tracks the warehouse down.

Inside the warehouse is an old monument to Angla. As Imogen starts to rummage, the masked killer enters. But luckily for Imogen, a noise outside distracts the killer, and they leave. Later on, whilst Imogen and Tabby at still there, Tabby’s Mother, Sidney, also visits, apparently to pay her respects to Angela. And so, Imogen and Tabby demand the truth about Angela. Sidney reveals that after Angela killed himself, all the classmates ran out of the rave, but no one rang emergency services. Therefore, Angela’s body wasn’t found until two days later.

The ending

When Shawn decides to visit Noa, she reveals that the night that she was arrested, she was covering for her Mother. It’s Karen’s funeral, and when her Mom, Martha, spots Imogen among those in attendance, she goes insane, whilst Sheriff Beasley promises that he will take away the lives of those, aka the Liars, responsible for Karen’s death. When it comes to the committee’s punishment, Marshall Clanton reveals that Kelly has provided evidence that Karen was about to harm Imogen before her death. Therefore, the Liars will only receive detention or a two-week suspension as punishment.

Imogen speculates to the four other Liars that the similarities between Angela and Karen’s death cannot be a coincidence. Faran learns that her Mom threatened Madame Giry with a lawsuit; therefore, Faran regains her role as Black Swan. As the five Liars make a dramatic, if not overly cheesy, speech at Karen’s grave, they spot the masked killer, A, watching them from afar.
