Created by Darren Starr, the same man who brought Beverly Hills 90210 and Sex and the City to our screens, Emily in Paris premiered its first season back in 2020. Lily Collins stars as the titular leading lady alongside an ensemble cast of European and U.S.-based actors including Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Ashley Park, Lucas Bravo, and William Abadie.
The series produced by MTV Entertainment Studios has a simple, yet effective premise – A young graduate from the U.S. gets the opportunity of a lifetime to travel to Paris and bring an American perspective to her marketing firm’s French branch. Upon arriving, she’s faced with some hilarious cultural clashes, makes some new and interesting friends and, of course, starts looking for love in a place known for being the ultimate romantic destination. The series is filmed in the French capital and, along with a lighthearted tale, features some impressive cinematography, fashion, and general silliness. It’s basically Sex and the City set in Paris. And the lead works in marketing instead of being a columnist.
Why is Emily in Paris so popular?
From the very beginning, the show about a lovable and fashionable college graduate teaching the French how to do marketing the American way was met with its fair share of controversy. Season one received significant backlash from French critics unhappy with the show’s portrayal of Parisians. Starr himself was bewildered at the amount of criticism his newest creation received. “Honestly, I was surprised that people would ever be offended by anything in the show. It’s a lighthearted romantic comedy,” he told The Hollywood Reporter back in August 2021.
Despite the criticism, there’s no denying audiences love watching the misadventures of this charming, often clueless, and always dressed to the nines young woman in the French capital. Within a month of release, Emily in Paris was streamed to 58 million households around the world. Not only that, but the series spent 40 consecutive days in the Netflix UK Top 10, making it one of the most popular Original series the streaming giant has ever released. There’s no denying Netflix subscribers love the vapid escapism and lighthearted comic relief from our day-to-day grind this show provides. It may not be as groundbreaking as Sex and the City was back in the 90s, but it certainly follows that same winning formula Starr got down to a T. And there’s no sign of its popularity diminishing.
