Dead Ringers is a psychological drama series created for TV by Alice Birch (Normal People). It’s loosely based on the 1988 movie of the same name, directed by David Cronenberg, which in turn is an adaptation of the novel Twins written by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland.
In this Prime Original series, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) plays identical twins Elliot and Beverly Mantle, highly-skilled gynecologists who want to launch their very own birthing and research center with the hopes of revolutionizing the entire birthing experience and improving women’s healthcare.
The Mantle twins look for potential backers and befriend ruthless billionaires Rebecca and Susan Parker, portrayed by Jennifer Ehle (Contagion) and Emily Meade (The Leftovers).
While they court these deranged entrepreneurs, Beverly falls madly in love with actress Genevieve (Britne Oldford), leading to a fractured relationship between the twins as Elliot grows dangerously jealous of her sister’s romance.
Before its initial release, Dead Ringers received encouraging reviews from critics, with much praise for Weisz’s performances and the show’s stylish sense of dread. But will Prime Video be quick to renew the series for a second season?
Will there be a Season 2 of Dead Ringers – renewed or canceled status
Dead Ringers has been advertised as a miniseries, which means it would seem highly unlikely that the show would be renewed for a second season. That being said, Prime Video has yet to decide whether to cancel or renew the series. There haven’t been any major announcements made just yet.
If this haunting drama series becomes a runaway hit, then Prime Video may want to reconsider its stance on the show. Just like other limited series in the past, such as Squid Game or Big Little Lies, there is always room for a second season, even if they’re labeled as stand-alone seasons at first.
I’d be surprised if the show is renewed, though, on the whole. The ending is quite controversial, and the show’s unique style may be quite off-putting to the wider public. Dead Ringers can sometimes be quite gruesome and ambiguously artsy, which may turn off audiences in the long run.
There’s no denying Rachel Weisz’s stunning dual performance or the show’s cinematic look and punchy dialogue.
Dead Ringers has a real bite to it, and its ballsy style may win over viewers after all. My guess is that it won’t be renewed, though, and that might be a good thing. Sometimes shows need to be brave enough to call it quits after just one offering.
As always, we will keep you posted on any updates on the pending renewal of Dead Ringers.
