The latest star-studded drama from David E. Kelley, Love & Death is the latest take on the much-adapted true story of Candy Montgomery, a Texan housewife who began an affair with a fellow member of her Methodist church congregation and hacked his wife, Betty Gore, to pieces with a wood-splitting axe.
As ever with HBO Max, the miniseries dropped three episodes on its premiere date of April 27, 2023, and will proceed weekly henceforth.
Here’s everything that happened in Love & Death Episode 4:
- Candy killed Betty with the axe, ostensibly in self-defense, though we didn’t see the crime.
- Candy spent the entire episode trying to cover up her own involvement by rehearsing her alibi and destroying evidence.
- Betty’s body was found by the neighbors after a worried Allan couldn’t get in touch with her.
- The police assumed that the killing was a cult murder, by gunshot, but the details of the murder weapon and the evidence suggested instead a crime of passion committed by a woman.
- At the end of the episode, Allan confessed to the police that he had an affair with Candy.

Predictions for Love & Death Season 1 Episode 5:
- Candy will definitely be found out.
- I had initially assumed that this was a more sympathetic portrait of Candy Montgomery than it’s turning out to be. While I think the show did a decent job of justifying why she wanted an affair, the pivot into murder and the covering up thereof has been especially damning for Candy, and the show seems to be relishing depicting her like a calculating maniac.
- We’ll probably begin to focus on the legal proceedings and the community’s response to Candy subsequent to her arrest.
