Summary

Virgin River Season 5 Part 2 consists of two cozy Christmassy episodes, exploring more of the ongoing dramas from this sleepy woodland town. Part 2 contains even more surprising plot twists and emotive, feel-good moments, resulting in an extremely entertaining conclusion.

Virgin River fans are in for a real treat this Christmas with the release of two eagerly-anticipated, back-to-back Holiday special installments, as the show concludes its highly entertaining fifth season run. The Netflix original series seems custom-made for the Holiday season and Season 5 Part 2 does not disappoint, with enough wholesome, heartwarming content to melt even the frostiest Scrooges and Grinches out there.

This two-part finale focuses on all of the burning questions from the series so far, whilst utilizing the beautiful backdrop of winter and Christmas in the scenic town of Virgin River for a cozy binge-watch this fall. As you’d expect from the romantic drama series, there is plenty of tension and many more shocking revelations to come.

Virgin River Season 5 Part 2 review and plot summary

The fifth season ends with two Christmas-themed installments, Episode 11, “The More the Merrier”, and Episode 12, “Father Christmas”, which make up a short and sweet Part 2. The main subplot in both of these wintery installments is the hunt for Mel’s biological father.

As you will all know, Mel’s sister Joey found their mother’s old love letters in the previous episode, written by a mystery man from Virgin River. Joey believes that this romantic individual could very well be Mel’s biological father. As Episode 11 begins, Mel and Jack discuss this dramatic affair whilst shopping for a new Christmas tree.

Early on, Mel decides to search for her biological father and a rather delightful scavenger hunt then follows. Mel and Jack jump from one clue to the next as they seek out the true identity of Mel’s father. It’s a surprisingly effective format that allows the writers to get creative. This becomes a fun detour in “The More the Merrier,” intercutting with many wholesome family moments as the annual musical gets underway.

It’s not all fun and games this Christmas season though. Teenager Lizzie worries about becoming a bad mother and Charmaine’s (never-ending) pregnancy only worsens. Meanwhile, Preacher’s past crimes come back to haunt him as a dead body is found in the woods and the police look to identify the corpse.

Season five has seen the show maturing and progressing with some of the best episodes from the series to date. This improved quality is just as evident in Part 2 as well, as the writers bring Christmas cheer to the small screen with scandalous drama and emotive subplots.

The show continues to offer an addictive mixture of daytime drama and small-town schmaltz. Yes, this has always been the case from Virgin River, but the drama seems to be heightened in the latest season and the emotions hit harder than ever before.

Is Virgin River Season 5 Part 2 worth watching?

All in all, Virgin River Season 5 Part 2 makes for a wholesome, entertaining watch this Christmas. The show musters up all the Holiday warmth it can with many hit Christmas songs and more sumptuous, scenic settings in the background, all working together to elevate the biting drama in the forefront.

The show can’t help but line up further seedy storylines to come though, and peppers its final third with even more standard twist endings. This, I guess, is just part and parcel of the genre, for better or worse, although it is hard to not get swept up in all of the wintery magic on display here. Virgin River concludes its fifth season in true style, with two Holiday specials that have definitely been worth the wait.
