In anime, there are romantic comedies that are completely separate and have a multitude of projects. Romantic Killer is now streaming on Netflix it is about a gamer named Anzu who gets transported to a world of hot guys (no one would ever complain), and it’s like she’s in a dream… someone else’s dream.

This series highlights being trapped in someone else’s mind while they are thinking of numerous things. It’s comedic, and of course, there’s romance in the air, but situations occur that throw Anzu for a little loop. The series listed below are similar to this one because of the similar conventions used in the genre. There’s a sprinkle of fantasy and adventure mixed in as well to cover all romantic stories.

Gamers (2017)

Amano Keita is the lonely protagonist who has a passion for gaming and is friends with Uehara Tasuku, who is secretly a fellow gamer and someone who believes his life is perfect. We also have Karen Tendou, the club president of the video game club, and Chiaki Hoshinomori, who constantly bickers with Keita. Gamers is hilarious and constantly has strong comedic moments filled with misunderstandings for these characters. It’s considered a chaotic romantic comedy.

Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun (2014) 

High school student Chiyo Sakura has a crush on schoolmate Umetarou Nozaki, but when she confesses her love to him, he mistakes her for a fan and gives her an autograph. When she says that she always wants to be with him, he invites her to his house and has her help with some drawings. She finds out that Nozaki is actually a renowned shoujo manga artist named Sakiko Yumeno, and they start working together. Their relationship is a slow build, and it makes for some funny moments.

New Game! (2016) 

New Game highlights the daily office lives of Aoba and her colleagues at the game development studio Eagle Jump. Any series that takes place in an office is bound to have some fun moments and quippy one-liners. There could be some office romances that make the character dynamics even more interesting.

Fruits Basket (2019)

After Tohru is taken in by the Soma family, she learns that twelve family members transform involuntarily into animals of the Chinese zodiac and help them deal with the emotional pain caused by the transformation. Even though it does sound a bit dramatic, the comedy flows in and out quite effortlessly to add more to the transformations. The interactions with the family as humans and animals are what makes this entertaining to watch.

Erased (2016) 

29-year-old Satoru Fujinuma is sent back in time 18 years to prevent the events leading to his mother’s death, which began with a series of kidnappings while he was in 5th grade. The fantasy elements in Erased are what make it interesting because of the time travel.

Skip Beat (2008) 

Kyouko went with her childhood friend, Shou, to Tokyo to pursue his dream of becoming an idol. Despite she is supporting him, Shou deceives her. Kyouko vows to get her revenge by defeating him in the entertainment world too. There is plenty of drama in this series because of how childhood friends can grow apart and have their issues with one another. There are many comedic moments between them that make the character dynamics fun to watch.

Toradora (2008) 

This series is also streaming on Netflix and is about Ryuji who is fierce in appearance but gentle at heart. He forms an unlikely friendship with Taiga, a tiny girl with a sharp tongue and a tough attitude. Together they try to help each other to confess their love to their crushes. This is truly the power of friendship and miscommunications are always fun to watch. That’s what makes this such a cute series and enjoyable because of the gimmick presented.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War (2019) 

The proudly privileged top two students of an elite school each make it their mission to be the first to extract a confession of love from one another. The concept in these romantic comedies is always interesting and it’s nice to watch something hopeful. That’s why series like Romantic Killer is necessary and the genre will continue to thrive because it’s considered niche now.

Love Flops (2022)

Asahi Kashiwagi is a student who one morning runs into a series of unusual accidents on the way to school – all in accordance with a vague television fortune he watched that morning. Which is all culminating with an unfortunate encounter with a girl. Coincidentally, all the girls he meets are new students or teachers at his school. Asahi’s prior knowledge of the girls earns him the suspicion of Yoshio. After school, he finds a love letter in his shoe locker, telling him to come to the cherry blossom tree behind the school, again according to his morning fortune. It’s a little adventure leaning heavily on the probability of the universe, and it’s nice to see that there is some love there as he goes on this journey.
