Tokyo Vice is one of the best shows on TV that doesn’t seem to get the praise it deserves, and after a riveting sophomore outing, Season 3 should be inevitable. While the show hasn’t been officially renewed by Max yet, all signs point towards positive news soon.

In the second season, Jake and Detective Katagiri teamed up to try to take down the people who murdered Polina, shifting the delicate balance of power within the Japanese yakuza, especially after a vital member of the Chihara-kai was murdered. These big narrative turns more than justify Season 3 artistically, and thus far the critical and commercial reception support the idea of a renewal sooner rather than later.

Tokyo Vice Season 3 Is Not Confirmed — Yet

At the time of writing (March 28, 2024), Tokyo Vice has yet to be officially renewed for Season 3. With any renewal process, the streaming platform will look at all the data, weigh the options, and determine whether the series is worthy of a third season.

What would Tokyo Vice Season 3 be about?

J.T. Rogers created Tokyo Vice, which is based on Jake Adelstein’s book of the same name. The series follows Jake, who relocates to Toyko to become the first foreign-born journalist in the city. As he learns the ropes, he finds himself embroiled with the Japanese yakuza. As we’ve seen things play out over the first two seasons, there are many ways a third season could go.

In the aftermath of the Season 2 finale, many pivotal players have fully developed arcs. We could see Jake struggling to fit in after the stunts he pulled to get the needed information. Sato finds himself in an interesting position where we could see him thrive in a new role. That said, how will that interlink with the rest of the yakuza?

How has Tokyo Vice Season 2 performed?

Tokyo Vice Season 2 has seen rave reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a score of 92% from critics and 93% from audiences, representing a 7% and 4% rise from Season 1.

On IMDb, the overall is skewed to include both seasons, but if you look at a per-episode basis, not a single episode is below a 7.6 rating, with several episodes clearing an 8 out of 10. For this site, driven by temperamental user ratings, this is very impressive.

Critics, including myself, have praised the second season with the cast settling into the roles and ramping up drama. From our review:

Top-to-bottom Tokyo Vice has become a must-watch series. It’s one of the more technically sound productions combined with an ensemble cast that makes you want more.

These numbers and reviews bodwell for a renewal.

The show took a little time to get renewed for a second season, even after the success of the first, and there is always uncertainty regarding Warner Bros and how they handle their TV shows. However, it would be a great shock if Tokyo Vice isn’t renewed for a third season. Between the critics and audience coming together, making this one of the highest-rated running series, the decision should be a no-brainer.

As always, we will keep you posted on any updates regarding the pending renewal of Tokyo Vice.
