It isn’t an accident that Stacy and Preston Clyburn’s kids have been so generally unlikeable throughout The Madison. In Episode 3, “Watch Her Fall”, it becomes a plot point. In the opening flashback, it’s revealed that Abigail was going through a divorce, utterly unsurprising to her parents, since it was obvious to them that Abby is a pampered idiot who has been making bad decisions her entire life on their dime.

Episode 2 of The Madison is a little weaker than the pilot, if you ask me. Not by a big stretch, granted, but there has to be a trade-off to less Kurt Russell, even though he keeps showing up in flashbacks, and here it’s a little forward momentum.

It’s very hard to consider The Madison as a spin-off of Yellowstone, which is sort of what it has been advertised as. Part of a tie-in triple-threat also comprising Marshals and The Dutton Ranch, Taylor Sheridan’s deeply contemplative neo-Western Montanaverse is certainly expanding, but if Episode 1 of this show is anything to go by, it’s also diversifying.

There’s basically no monster action in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which you should probably be aware of. It’s fine, though, since you can have too much of a good thing. Season 2 only has a limited budget, and Episode 3, “Secrets”, is all about putting in the emotional, character-driven groundwork that is going to make the inevitable monster action later feel more resonant.
